Why is Safin listed as 6@  He currently is !72!nd in the rankings.

I think he's using some "protected ranking" thing that you get if your ranking drops due to injury. You get to pick a handful of tournaments in the year where you use your old ranking.

I'd be really happy if someone found a mistake in my calculations and informed me.

I think if you play Masters Cup you can only have 4 non-compulsory countable tournaments.

Think he needs to win two matches at Toronto and two at Cinci to increase his points in each case (defending Binghampton and Cinci). Hope he plays Washington cos he would be something like the 10th best ranked player, so stands a chance of getting to QFs or summink.

Not really because the rest of the reason is that he was very recently a top 10 player and now has a ranking that doesn't reflect his ability.
Granted there are a few players that fit that category, but Henman's appearance in the final means he gets the WC. Bingo.
