(1) I am not sure what Dana meant, but I agree that for someone to commit this sort of act, it indicates a problem in the brain or some sort of physiological problem that goes beyond the explanation of psychology.  Otherwise, things like this would happen more often.  Aren't there lots of angry people with grudges walking the streets every day?  It would be interesting to know what exactly is going on inside this killers body, brain, and nervous system.  I have a strong suspicion that this killing and the killings like it (e.g. the Columbine shootings) are related to the consumption of SSRIs, and that in certain people with suicidal/homicidal inclinations the drugs actually break down the inhibition to commit these crimes. And my theory is that the rise in these sorts of incidences over the past 15 years or so exactly coincides with the rise in prescriptions of these medications to children and young adults in schools.

(2) It is true that guns are very easy to come by in Virginia.  NRA-type people like to claim that gun ownership makes people safer because being armed protects you from being the victim of a violent crime.  But, obviously students and teachers aren't going to arm themselves to protect against being attacked.  I wish there had been some gun-toting yahoo carrying a concealed weapon around in one of those campus buildings to shoot back, but realistically that is not going to happen.  I wonder how this is going to affect the attitudes of Virginians towards gun control.

(3) It looks like the administration of Virginia Tech handled this poorly, but I don't blame them for misunderstanding the problem they were dealing with.  Blacksburg is a very peaceful and quiet area.  I think this was totally beyond their comprehension.  What should/can universities do to protect against this sort of thing form happening?  I would like to see some serious questions raised about the role of medication in these sorts of incidents.  That would really shake the trees of the pharmacuetical industry which is possibly the most powerful lobby in Washington and one of the world's biggest indusrties.

I am not sure that gun control would have prevented this from happening.  Maybe, maybe not.  Some people want to blame video games.  I don't buy it, but in a way, I could see it. Was this a suicide that evolved into a mass-killing because of guns and video games or was this guy really aiming for a mass-killing which inevitably ended in suicide?

And then I wonder, why is it that we have so many more suicides these days than we had had 40 years ago?  Guns were just as readily available back then?  Is it because of the medication?  Seems like all of these school shooters are taking SSRIs.  Is it a cultural thing?

Why is it always some white guy or some asian guy that goes on these shooting rampages?  In this country, blacks and latinos do most of the shooting, but it almost always in the context of some gang fight or some altercation or personal conflict.  With school or work suicide/shootings, it is always a white guy or an asian guy.

He has to win Memphis and Haas and Berdych both have to flame out in the first two rounds.  For whatever reason, the top 10 seems to be delinated right around the 2,000 point mark. So, when Andy joins the 2,000 point club, he will probably be right around the top 10.  He still has a way to go to get there.  I would guess that it will happen in April or May.

edit:

May would be a very conservative estimate.  April is more likely.  March is possible, if he tears it up in Memphis, Indian Wells, and Miami, i.e. exceeds his seeding in all three tournaments.

He needs some time off.  I'm not concerned about Davis Cup.
12  General Community / Andy Talk / Re: Murray paying the price for fragility on: April 03, 2007, 05:01 am

Sure, but he was in that situation becaise he's so sickly and injury prone. i mean he wears an ankle brace all the time now because one ankle is weak.

I have two questions.  (1) why do you only post when Andy is losing in a match or (the few times) after Andy has lost a match?

(2) What make you think that Andy is any more fragile than 99% of the othe players on the ATP.  He wears an ankle brace?  So what?  Roddick wears two ankle braces.  He's not as robust as Nadal?  So what?  Nobody is as robust as Nadal.  He has lost some matches recently because of injuries?  So what?  Show me an ATP player who hasn't?

You are the dumbest critic of Andy I have ever read, because you only point out flaws and magnify them well beyond actual proportion.

Well, that explains a lot.  Makes me feel a little better about the loss.
