Murray should quit Davis Cup next year

Quote

Andy Murray's former coach, Mark Petchey, believes the British No.1 should quit Davis Cup next year to give other players, such as Dan Cox, a chance to shine.

Mark Petchey joins the likes of Tim Henman and Goran Ivanisevic in believing it would be beneficial for Team GB in the long run if Murray leaves them to fight on their own.

I don't think Andy should play Davis Cup next year. He's going to get nothing out of it and he shouldn't have to change his schedule to travel all over the place.

If that happens, there is a fantastic chance for Dan Cox to step up now and get that international experience.

Dan Evans was given his chance in the last round but there are guys like Dan, Josh Goodall and Jamie Baker who are looking to be given a chance.

We have a lot of good players around the 150 to 250 mark, probably more than any other country, and guys like this need one or two good experiences that can go a long way.

Great Britain will face Lithuania away in their next tie from 5th - 7th March 2010 in Europe/Africa Zone Group II.

If Murray drops out, the team will do badly and just lose all the time.

It's a team game though, if that's the case then they don't deserve to have Murray.

All Murray is doing is keeping them breathing just above the water's surface, they will never achieve anything unless they sort themselves on their own first.

Poll?

I think he should quit... he's carried the team for long enough, and achieved very little from it.

The question is, what scenario is appropriate for his return?

If he quits the Davis Cup he will be accused of turning his back on GB (even Jamie accused him of that) and if he plays the press have a field day on  the lower standard of the other players.  I feel it is an unnecessary pressure on him.

I believe that to get that elusive first GS, then Andy should drop the Davis Cup to focus all his energy on the GS objective until it is achieved.  Once it is done then I feel it would be alright for him to return.  Personally, I would prefer Andy to return when the rest of the team has managed to achieve promotion from the present tier 3 otherwise they will just yoyo up and down between tier 2 and tier 3 and waste Andy's time and effort.

He should offer to only play after the USO until they are back in group 1 and tell them to use a specialist doubles team for every tie unless it's clear it doesn't work. If they get that far they should at least have a chance of winning 1 other tie against the likes of Poland, Ukraine, Austria and Israel who they've lost to recently.

How can any Andy Murray fan in their right mind think Andy should play Davis Cup  ?     He can only accentuate the weakness in the team.   The youngsters must shoulder some responsibility, learn their trade, develop experience and then - when they have some experience under their belt and have progressed to the next group - Andy could come back in for crucial matches.   Two good players are needed for a Davis Cup, preferably with a good doubles team - unfortunately we dont have two good players and the doubles are a bit iffy.
Stay away Andy - Look after yourself.  You will do British Tennis a lot more good by winning that Slam we all want so much

I totally agree that it is time the younger ones should be given the chance and develop their skills.  Andy should not have the shortcomings of GB tennis on his shoulders nor should he be vilified for concentrating on winning a GS ahead of any commitment to the LTA.

Good. They can play in the pigeon leagues. There's no point in Andy playing.

Of course Andy should get out of the Davis Cup and focus on winning more tournaments and particularly a GS.  Having him play against Poland, risking further injury to his wrist, was a complete fiasco.  The other players need a chance to buck themselves up and prove that GB isn't a pushover.  And as for a doubles team, we already have Skupski and Fleming, who have won two ATP titles this year.  Why they weren't included in the Poland tie is a mystery to me.

I agree.  When I watched that last Davis Cup event, the gulf between Andy and the other lads was massive and very obvious.
