Murray 'pro-active' in hunt for coach

In the first of a series of exclusives for MW before the World Tour Finals, Andy Murray has confirmed he is determined to a find a new coach.

After a short spell with Spaniard Alex Corretja, Murray joined forces on a temporary basis with Darren Cahill, Andre Agassi’s former coach, and speculation is rife that the two could fashion a more permanent deal.

What Murray is most concerned about, though, is finding a committed coach for the long term.

Tellingly, when asked if he was actively searching, he said: “I’m definitely pro-active but I want to find the right person to do it. You can’t bring someone in, for example, for just the grand slams.

“I’m not going to get someone who only wants to do it for 10 weeks when I need them for 25 weeks,” he said. “That would be a complete waste of time and you’d get nothing done.

“This kind of thing would change the dynamic of the team. I’m definitely looking to find someone but I want them for 20-25 weeks of the year.”

And ahead of the World Tour Finals, Murray was brimming with confidence and feels he has prepared well by winning three tournaments – Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai - since the US Open.

“I think guys feel pressured by me,” he said. “I’ve played a lot of matches - that always helps.”

“If you haven’t played a lot, then you play in somewhere as intense as the O2, you’re going to feel pretty rough afterwards.”

Interesting as the message I took from that long Mail interview was that he was happy with the status quo and would be calling on Cahill to help in run-up to GSs.
