Murray announces plan to retire this year

Quote

Don't know about you all, but I don't know what to do now, reading all the comments, and overviews does make me as well sad as pleased. I feel he plays just one other match now and that will be his last.
It's nice to read your post on MW, we all shared the joy of being a fan and I so much enjoyed sharing this on MW.
I cried when  I saw the Wimbledon comment; "What happens next, you've done more than you know".
For me, he was an inspiration not only in his sport but in the way he lived. I was blessed to watch a a few of his matches live.
Can't imangine how hard it must be for Andy to finish in the way he has to now. Just wish him all the best and  as painfree as possible...

^ Lovely post FP and I agree with every word! Yes....I'm sure it will be hard on Andy for a while, but with all his family and friends to support him, he'll be able to build a new life for himself and I wouldn't be at all surprised it's around tennis. He'd make a great coach and mentor for the for the stars of the future! He's always been great with the youngsters anyway! Very Happy I'll miss watching him play so much. I'm sure we all will, but with all he's given us....no one could ask for more!

PS....There's still videos of his most important matches! I've already watched him win his first Olympic Gold this morning and was so very proud of him all over again! wub

PSS.......I very much doubt anyone will ever be able to break his Olympic Gold Medal record now!  Wink

Andy,

Sorry to hear that your hip injury will probably cut short your tennis playing career, but thank you for the pleasure you’ve given us over the past 15 years, you’ve truly inspired a nation.
You have done more than any British sportsman has ever done, winning twice at Wimbledon and the Olympics, also your team efforts with the Davis Cup.
That’s without mentioning all the other tournaments you’ve won and competed in over the years.
You might not have won every competition you’ve entered, but you’ve always given 100% and then some more, to every point you were fighting for.
That is why it’s been such a joy to share your victories and agonising to watch the defeats.
But you’ve enjoyed the wins and accepted the defeats with great dignity honesty and emotion, showing us all why they have meant so much to you.
You have made the whole of Britain proud to be British,
the whole of Scotland even prouder that you are Scottish
and the people of Dunblane, very proud to be one of their Sons.

Please don’t beat yourself up about what you could have done and competitions you could have won, you have done more than any of us and still have much more to give to the game of tennis and sports in general.
There is a whole country of young people out there that can learn from you.
You can start on the next chapter of your life and with your inspiration, who knows who you can help nurture on their way to a successful future?
Because with your support and list of achievements, you could inspire the career of many young people, just like your mum has.

Good luck to you and your family in the future and thanks again for the good times and for being yourself and always doing your best.

Thanks.

If he can't make it to Wimbledon, surely they will lay on some kind of goodbye ceremony on centre court, perhaps on the middle Saturday when they have lots of sporting stars in the royal box.  It's the absolute least Wimbledon could and should do.

Yes ..... if he can't make it to Wimbledon I do hope they'll have a goodbye ceremony for him.  They really should do that.  Having it on the middle Saturday is a good idea.  I think they have had ceremonies on Centre Court before (different ones though).
Andy would like it I think.  Although I think he'd cry, but that would be all right wouldn't it.

EDIT:  I've found a "feedback" form on SW19's website so I've suggested they should have a ceremony such as the one Ruthie is mentioning.  The form was submitted successfully but they say they have lots of emails and so there mightn't be any reply.  But anyway you never know?

^ Would Andy want that tho?  Might be too soon and too emotional for him.

^  I don't know if he'd want it.  It might be too soon.  I suppose Wimbledon or someone there would make a decision like that, and they'd ask Andy what he thought before doing anything?
It might be upsetting for Andy and we wouldn't want him to be sad.

This is very sad to read, but Andy, bless him, what a true sportsman and champion. Once in a while someone comes along---Andy has been and continues to be one of those people.  If it is to be he can retire with pride.  He will always be an inspiration.

Thank you, Andy, and good luck with your rehabilitation. You can put your whole self into that job so that you can fully enjoy the rest of your life.

As my mother would say, we must all keep our peckers up.

Andy's given a new interview and it's heartbreaking but he's doing all the right things https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/jan/13/andy-murray-tennis-retirement

“I don’t want to stop playing tennis just now,” he admitted. “I don’t feel ready, the rest of my body feels perfect.
I have no motivation to do anything else just now. Thinking about what I do when I finish playing and rushing into decisions – from speaking to psychologists – is the worst thing I should be doing. It’s going to take time for me to deal with it. I need time to get over it and then to know what my next steps are going to be."

So sad... tennis has lost a true legend Frown

The last time I cared about a sportsman retiring, it was Michael Jordan. That's how highly I rate Andy.

I pray he gets to play one more final match on Centre Court this summer before he hangs up his racquet.

Re some kind of ceremony at Wimbledon, of course it would have to be with Andy's agreement.  It's five month on and it might be even harder to watch Wimbledon without any involvement at all, but who knows.  He should at least be given the opportunity to say some kind of farewell at W if he can't play there - and it might be less upsetting than going out in an early round to someone without an ounce of his ability.   So good idea to lobby mg!
So many more wonderful tributes today including from Martina - 'I always loved him, as a player and a person'.   wub
The Observer is full of them and not just in the sports pages.  Reading them, and remembering what a bad press he got in the early days and all that negativity he had to face, it makes me proud that we his true fans recognised and valued his qualities as a player and a person from the word go.

^  It's 5 months away which is a long time when you think of the weather between now and then.  I think Wimbledon will already be planning something for Andy during The Championships.  They probably wouldn't say anything about any ceremony to us ...... yet.
Andy would be kept fully informed and he'd be given the choice as to whether he agreed or not.
I think Wimbledon get so many emails on lots of different subjects that it's unlikely they could reply to them all  shocking
Yes there are lots of tributes to Andy all over the place Smile
