Murray back in action in Madrid

Andy Murray looks set to come back from a slight elbow injury to compete in the Madrid Open this week.

Murray sustained the injury in Monte Carlo last month that forced him to withdraw from the Barcelona Open. However, the British number one has revealed that he has been back practicing for the last week and is ready to take on the world’s best again in Madrid.

Murray also revealed that he has been working closely with Darren Cahill this week following his decision to part company with Alex Corteja. The Australian is a former coach of multiple grand slam winners Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi.

As fourth seed in the tournament he will receive the usual first round bye. He is set to meet Frenchman Gilles Simon or former world top 5 Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.  If he repeats his feats of Monaco, Novak Djokovic is seeded to meet him in the semi finals.

R3 : Troicki
QF : Berdych
SF : Djokovic
F: Nadal

Murray appears in good spirits, saying, "I feel great. I've been practising really well. I feel good again. I've got the right mentality just now. I've been playing very well, so hopefully I can keep that up here. I've got a tough first match, but definitely one I can win if I play well."

Nice to hear him sound so positive, although we have heard this often enough before a defeat so let's not count on anything just yet! If he can continue with the form he showed in Monte Carlo, it should be a great week, and he won't be playing until Wednesday so he can have more time to practise and get used to the altitude and so on.  Really looking forward to this tournament and seeing the top four slug it out.  Soderling is already showing signs he cannot progress any further, which was anticipated to be honest.  Andy needs to be aiming for Fed and beyond, and the crucial thing is that he enters the Wimbledon phase where his slam chances are far greater than in Paris, in an upbeat confident mood, and feeling that he can beat the top guys when it matters.

Oh, and I HAVE to look ahead.  The thought of Andy ending Nole's run and getting some kind of revenge for the mauling he suffered in Melbourne in that final gets me very excited.  Andy is due him some payback and here would be a good start.

powerful words from AM. hope the motivation translates into good outcome. tough draw in madrid but if he can sustain this kind of mentality, he's gonna do damage on clay Smile

An experienced Spanish coach says Andy is a better player than Nadal and Federer on this link which is remarkable. If only Andy believed it himself!

I've always believed this, as far as i am concerned Andy is arguably one of, if not the most creative player on the mens ATP world tour. I believe he is also one of the most astute tacticians of the mens game. As soon as he learns to put his own jigsaw together and fit all the pieces together, i believe he will be unstoppable, its no surprise to me that these comments in this article were said. However we must not get carried away, it is after all one opinion in a multitude of many about our Andy. yay

yay    Have to say though that I'm a bit surprised Andy volunteered this very personal information, but maybe some undercover twerp from the Mail somehow conned him into it.

However, I can't see any logical reason why a sportsman shouldn't have sex a few hours before a major competition, although refraining from the acrobatic variety might be wise ... Very Happy


And good luck to Andy and Jamie in their doubles today against Granollers/Lopez - last on court 4, so it'll probably be an evening match

Good to hear Andy sounding so positive though like sg28 I've learned not to read too much into positive comments before matches. Still after MC this may be different.  Sure hope so.
