Murray cruises into round two

Quote

Andy Murray avoided any first round drama when he dispatched Karol Beck 6-3 6-1 4-2, with the Slovakian retiring two games from the end with a shoulder problem.

Despite having a career high ranking of 36, Beck has languished just outside of the top 100 after serving a two year suspension for substance abuse.

Murray has in the past made a habit of making hard work of opening matches against lowly opponents, so it was refreshing to see him bring an attacking game to this opening encounter. The Scot was rarely in serious trouble on his serve and only faced break points in the fifth game of the third set.

The British number one stressed the importance of peaking at the right moments pre-match, and this performance seemed to back up his assertions. Murray was solid but unspectacular, and when the first serve percentage did pick up, the fifth seed did look impressive.

Next up is Ilya Marchenko in round 2.

A business-like performance from Andy but pity Beck didn't see the match out.

Marchenko is another player Andy hasn't played but whose track record is totally undistinguished.

I kinda thought he'd retire if Andy broke him again, but, for a couple of minutes it looked as though he might break Andy.

It was lovely to see 'Andy's Boys' were there in their T shirts, though I never spotted them till after the match, and I always enjoy people's reactions when they suddenly realise that they're on camera!

Not seen them yet (as still to watch most of the match recorded) but thought they must be there as I heard the chants. Great that they're back.

Nice bit of practise for Andy today. But will someone please get rid of John Lloyd for the duration, give him laryngitis or something? I'd pay good money pray Even prefer the charmless Greg.....

After years of mindless moronic garbage from mats wilander, contradicting himself after every single point, i think id settle for John Lloyd every day of the week. I watched the Federer/Lacko highlights up until the point he said 'Lacko's forehand is just as big as Federer's'...........Bye Bye mats.

Remember Simon Reed's blog at Wimbledon where he said Jarkko Nieminen had a powerful serve. Very Happy

Mats Wilanders opinions have been the subject much of my conversation today and I havent been pleasant. If only they would stop talking about how amazing Roger Federer is, I've heard enough of it from Barry Cowan at Sky Sports and I think I get the gist of what he and other commentators mean by now.
