Murray hits back over Lloyd criticism

Quote

Variations of the idiom "tidy desk, tidy mind" could be applied to this argument.  Djokovic is immaculate in his appearance.  Nadal is very precise about how he arranges his bag, towels and bottles, etc.  Andy pulls items out of his bag, then stuffs them back in disarray.  His hair isn't "styled" to look the way it does and his patchy face hair isn't exactly designer stubble either.  Surely when he looks in the mirror he sees a "mess".  As much as I like him as a person and appreciate his marvellous tennis, he does, from my view, look scruffy.  Sorry.  No doubt HE feels good about himself.  However, if his hair were cut professionally, clean shaven, head held high, shoulders back, it would radiate a more confident air and perhaps even reflect an edge in his game.  When Borg looked the way he did, it was in an era of hippie types and he didn't really look out of the ordinary.   Just my opinion.

Interesting points you raise, however that said i don't entirely agree. Yes your right when you imply we are judged by our appearence, but on the other hand why should we as individuals conform to that narcisstic way of thinking? As Unshaven and as unruly as our Andy seems to be, its his own self awareness and individual sense of self that make him such a complete person, more so i think than the mono toned and stereotypical look and soundbites of Rafa, Nole and Fedex. Its one of the main reasons why i love andy, he's so different from any other player on the mens ATP tour. He's neither over manicured or self absorbed. Rather than complain and deride this unique diversity (not saying you are deriding or complaining - refers more to John Lloyd), why not embrace it. Although the harder route in life, it is possible to succeed, whilst still retaining a degree of individualism. Moreover, i believe Andys edge to his game is his variety and phyisical prowess, he does not need to rely on his looks to create an aurra. He is already viewed by his peers as someone difficult to play when he is on his game - suggesting he already has some kind of aurra sourrounding himself, maybe not yet at the level of the top three guys but an aurra none the less. I applaud Andy for standing up to his critics on this rather personal and subjective issue, but sometimes its better just to say nothing and remain dignified rather than get drawn into a war of words. hug

My opinion is that, at the end of the day, Andy Murray looking slick and groomed, with nice short hair, just wouldn't be him, would it? He's just not like that, so he should do whatever makes him comfortable.

With just one title to his name, I don't think David Lloyd is in any position to comment on Murray. Does he think that the few whiskers Murray has gets in the way of his racket perhaps!

I feel that all you guys are ignoring David Lloyd's comments. I don't believe that he was attacking Andy's tennis ability. Far from that, he seemed to be supportive.

I consider that if a man feels good about himself, he should show that to the wider audience. When Andy comes on court, he often looks dishevelled. Mens sana in corpore sano. Being neat in his appearance would ultimately aid his tennis.

If Andy were to smarten himself, I am sure that all other matters would spring into place

I'm sure Andy is very happy in his own skin and when we see press photos of him coming out of posh restaurants he's still wearing his Adidas clobber (not sure who he's trying to please).  If my husband took me out for a meal and didn't make an effort to look smart, he'd get a right ear bashing from me and we're senior citizens, but still pride ourselves in how we look.  It's my whole body holistic viewpoint.

I'm still 100% in agreement with you. Maybe it's the age thing.

Let's see what happens tomorrow.  My money says he'll at least be clean shaven and maybe his locks will have been tamed a little too <vbg>
