Well done Andy, a good solid win, my only regret is that I didn't get to see the second set

Watched the replay of the match this evening, have to say Andy played as well as I've seen him play.

I remember being delighted when Murray won his first masters, dispatching Djokovic in the process. Since then it's almost become routine... oh but were it the same for slams.
That's how I feel and I think even Andy does too these days - he barely celebrated at the end. It's all secondary to the Slams now.

Murray was below his best and relied on Federer to play even worse.I can't believe some of the stuff on here. Federer didnt turn up at all and if he'd taken half his break points he'd have won easily. Thats the reality. You all know that but still repeat the same old fantasy about Andy being a world beater. He's not of course.
Murray looked quite thin in the face I thought, even ill.
Either way he's much lighter on his feet, which is all to the good
I can't believe that you were watching the same match as everyone else, including the commentators. Yes, Federer turned in, what was for him, an indifferent performance, but that doesn't alter the fact that Andy played extremely good tennis, and has done so for most of the tournament. Also, Andy looks pale at the best of times. That's his natural skin-tone. He did look a bit drained after his first match, but that's hardly surprising since he was still suffering the effects of a viral infection.

Realising the massive potential of the Asian market Federer gave a very professional interview and completely eclipsed and outclassed Murray - who even had to be told to smile!
whoever Murray's advisers are they'd better get on his case quick. China is a huge future market in tennis and, not to put to fine a point on it, Andy could blow it single handed
The official who asked Andy to smile said it quite humorously. However, did you not hear Andy's response when he said he was shy and therefore wasn't entirely comfortable in front of huge crowds? The same goes for the interview. Federer is fortunate in that such things don't pose a problem for him - in fact you could say that he likes the sound of his own voice - but he wasn't amused when asked to repeat a few words in Mandarin. I'd rather Andy kept his speeches short than embarrass himself by umming and ahing in an attempt to make them longer, and there's nothing worse than a smile that isn't spontaneous.
If China is a huge future market in tennis, then I would expect the Chinese to be more interested in a player's status in the rankings and tennis performances than his/her charm and oratorial abilities. I do agree that Andy could do with improving his on-court appearance, but it seems that if he growls and berates himself, that's wrong; yet if he plays looking dour and subdued, that too isn't acceptable. Either way, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Federer isn't renowned for his praise, so I leave you with this quote from the BBC report:
"Federer, who is back at world number two following his semi-final win against Novak Djokovic, paid tribute to the champion.
"He had an outstanding tournament," said the 29-year-old, who has won 16 Grand Slam titles.
"It's not easy to win these Masters 1000 tournaments. I know how tough they are to win so congratulations on a great effort.
"I couldn't quite break through. Andy played great. He didn't give me much and made me work extremely hard - going for big shots which I couldn't pull off, which was unfortunate but I still had a great tournament."
Can you argue with that?

Constructive criticisim never hurt anyone! All we want is a polished professional to represent us. Who knows, if Andy improves his image, he might land a few lucrative deals in the foreseeable future. Everyone wants to be an all around talent in the making. His destiny is to no day be on top of the tennis world so he should brush up on his professionalism if he is to represent a nation of people and the tennis profession in the nearby future.

"Tonight's match was, from my side, very solid," said Murray. "It was obviously a great, great match for me. Made few mistakes. As a tournament overall I'm very happy with it. I served great, especially when I was behind in the games. I hit the ball well from the back of the court. Against Roger you have to go after it early. I returned his serve well tonight and got a lot of free points on my serve; my second serve has improved so much since the start of the season.
“I’ve moved really well all week, the speed was very good tonight. I hit a lot of great shots on the run and you have to come up with a lot of great shots against Federer if you want to beat him.”
"I thought he played well overall," said Federer. "He didn't give me much. I was missing a few too many shots, which I wish I hadn't because that could have definitely maybe swung momentum around, given me more confidence to play more forward, more attacking. But missing so many important shots really over and over again obviously took a lot of my confidence away. Then the targets seemed to get smaller and smaller. That's definitely his credit, a pity for me."
The 29-year-old Federer was bidding to add to the trophies he has won at the Australian Open and Cincinnati (d. Fish) this season; the 16-time Grand Slam champion native slipped to a 63-28 lifetime mark in tour-level finals.
"I had a good tournament," reflected Federer. "I thought I played well this week. Had some great wins against [Robin] Soderling, [John] Isner, [Andreas] Seppi, also [Novak] Djokovic. I'm very happy with where my game is at. Today could have been better. But, look, Andy was the best player of the tournament so he deserved it."

Oh what a joy it was to have my prediction proved wrong and so convincingly. Today on Aussie Sky News sportline they said that Andy thrashed Fed with sometimes breathtaking tennis. The commentators said they thought it was the best Andy had played this year (though not sure I quite agree as I think some of his tennis at Aussie Open might have been better) and that Andy had given Fed a masterclass. When Fed said afterwards that it was a great effort on the part of Andy I thought how patronising can you get - sounds like a teacher marking a pupil. But at least he had the grace then to say he played great. How long i wonder before it emerges that Fed had something wrong with his back/legs/you name it? Oh and so nice to see Fed with that sucking sour lemons look he has when beaten by Andy in a big match!
Aileen, I'd not heard that about the viral infection at USO. I do hope he can shake it off completely. I thought he looked rather ill myself particuarly under the eyes. And if he's losing hair on top - who cares. Perhaps he'll end up like Agassi, winning multiple slams sans hair.

I can't believe that Rob was watching the same match. The reason Roger missed so many shots is because of Andy's return, they were always different, spins, looping returns, soft hard, fast, slow. Thus it looks as if Roger is making unforced errors when he is unable to handle the pace etc of the return. He looked( Roger) as if he wasn't playing his best when in fact he wasn't allowed to. Please give credit where it is due and that is with the Andy who played a very clever game, as the commentators said and they know a lot more about tennis than we do!
Well done Andy! On to London and beat the lot.

Quite agree Michelle. I was thinking after my last post that I wanted to add that perhaps Fed didn't play his best because Andy didn't allow him to - which is exactly what you've said. After all, apparently he'd been playing near his best prior to that when he beat Soderling and Nole (though didn't see those matches myself). And usually Fed rises to the big occasion. Instead Andy made him look really ordinary.

I agree with Michelle about Roger not being able to play his shots. Sometimes the opponents of these top players make them look good by practically putting the ball on these players rackets service after service and shot after shot with no variance in pace, depth or direction. Andy, by not doing this will often highlight flaws in their games and pressure them into playing the wrong shot or a wayward shot to try and win the point.Maybe the time will come when he again beats the TOP PLAYERS (isnt Andy a top player?) and it will be acknowledged properly that he was the better player, and not that his opponents were tired or not at their best.

That was a very good performance by AM over the week on the back of the poor defeat by Ljubicic in Beijing.

It was sheer delight watching Andy outwit and outplay 'the great man', knowing just how much he hates Andy beating him. Leif Shiras, the Sky commentator, was spot on in his remark about Federer's 'grudging respect' for Andy's backhand, with the emphasis on the word 'grudging'. It was an outstanding effort from Andy starting with him winning the toss and deciding to receive - everything Andy did was designed to win points and stay on Federer's case, relentlessly chipping away at his confidence and unflappability. Andy surprised Federer with the speed of his returns, his improved consistency on the first serve, the penetration and direction of his second serve, the depth of his ground strokes, especially the forehand. Federer's frustration and indignation boiled over when he argued with the umpire in French, so it remained a private conversation, displaying a lack of manners to his non-French speaking opponent. Very sour grapes from a very grumpy opponent, Andy deliciously winning the mental and emotional battle as well as the tennis match, 1000 points and well over $600,000.
This was Andy's eighth victory out of thirteen matches against Federer, possibly the best tennis player the world has ever seen, an incredibly impressive statistic. Andy always relishes playing him, why wouldn't he, as he is a constant thorn in Federer's side, consistently coming up with the game to drive Federer to distraction and topple him off his smug, all-conquering perch. Andy has single-handedly exposed 'the great man' for the sore loser he really is as we have seen another side to him when Andy beats him. He usually accepts his rare defeats gracefully but when it comes to Andy, he really has a problem, and yesterday was no exception, citing the linesman for him possibly losing the match. Fighting talk and once again, insulting to Andy. Even though he went on to say Andy played great, it was still unforgivable. Andy outclassed him in the second set and he knew it. This was not a fluke performance, it was an Andy Murray masterclass. Andy has won six out of seven Masters' finals he has played in - he has become the Master of the Masters series.
