I'd like to be impartial, but I can't!

This is one of the benefits of being a member of a forum like this. We may have our differences when it comes to tennis, but when it comes to supporting each other in times of difficulty or illness, we're only too happy to do so.

Oh Sabine.. sorry, didn't see this.
If there's any positive to come out of this, it's that your cousin is getting out after 6 months. Some people never do.

It's very much appreciated, Aileen.

Yes, she's happy now but isn't completely back to the way she used to be. And since she was in Texas, none of us had seen her in a long time. It was a complete shock when she arrived for the proceedings. Her injuries were fresh and too noticeable but other than that, she looked so strong and determined to end it.

I have great admiration for your cousin because it sounds like she went through hell, and that's something which, as @scotnadian said, a lot of women find difficult or impossible to get out of for a variety of reasons. In fact some of them even claim that they still love the b*****d. However, even if she is a strong and determined lady, she'll still need a lot of love, help and support from her family and friends, something I'm absolutely sure they'll provide. Also is there some kind of self-help group which she could also contact?

Whoa, still love them? Seriously? Maybe if you are the 50 shades type.
And reasons like what, Aileen? Family and finance are the only two reasons apart from 'loving' them that I can think of.
And I didn't even think about the self-help groups. Yeah, maybe she will join one soon or already did. I don't think everybody tells me everything going on because I'm still not aware of the details of what she went through. And I understand if she doesn't me to know. Maybe when it is the right time..

Yes, Sabine, seriously. Not only have I read about it in articles on domestic abuse but I once worked for a solicitor who dealt with divorce cases as well as other matters and he had a client who initially said she wanted to divorce her husband but then changed her mind because she said she still loved him - and the day she came into the office to tell him that she had a black eye and an arm in plaster. I can't remember now if she had children, but it must be terrible for kids to witness this sort of abuse, so you'd think that for their sake if nothing else a divorce would be the most sensible thing to do. That said, not every woman has the courage to do that, although fortunately there are support groups in the UK that they can turn to. Incidentally, it isn't only wives who get battered, but husbands as well (and again my boss had one such case), only they don't like to admit the fact for fear of being seen as 'unmanly'. Fortunately for them they too now have a support group.
I think you're being very sensible in your approach to all this btw.
