My writing (lead up to a novel)

Quote

This thread is for a productive reason. My main ambition in life is to be a bestselling author, and that takes a whole lot of experience, determination, patience etc. etc. But to get me the best possible chance of being successful, I have tried my hand at writing my first 120,000 word novel right now. I have wrote a mere two paragraphs of the novel's first chapter, all I need is an opinion on how you felt when reading it, and a bonus if you liked it and would be keen to read more. This means an awful lot to me.

CHAPTER ONE

It would be a completely different world if people did not acquire the power of senses. It would be different so much so that our lifestyles may be vastly more complex than it is in its current format. We would have a wholly (or midly) unique outlook on the stratosphere in which we live and breathe. This was the feeling that the chap driving the busted up red Ford Fiesta had at that precise moment in time, a life of no sense.
Strangely though, it was not entirely his own fault that he was having brief moments without the five senses accompanying him. Something was overtaking him in his body and in his mind. The feeling was arcane, but the pain was as rich as the taste of chocolate. His eyes were burning a sickening yellow tinge, and his mouth bulging out at obscure angles. The presentable layer of skin was fading into a sheet of white, and his fingernails were pouring blood. He was no longer breathing the air; oh no he was way passed that normality. He was breathing thick green smog. And it was deciding the rate of his death at pace.

Maybe a wee Synopsis of your intended story prior to the first chapter would help to put it in to context.

It's basically about a 'virus' that is caused when petrol stations overload and seap out gas that performs weird illusions on people, such as seeing people from the dead made completely of the gas and one man called Monty has to prevent the illness from ending his life and the rest of the human race. The virus sends people insane and if it doesn't end their life, it turns them into man eating ghosts.

^ Well, that gives me fuel for thought....good luck with it.

Well, it beats the crap out of Fifty Shades of Titillating Grey any day.  Smile  If that pish can get published, I have every hope for you.

Is this a critique of our over-reliance on fossil fuels? If not, it just sounds insane.

Gangsta, I've never written a fiction book but I have written 2 or 3 small books on my part of the world and many articles for local magazines over the last 20 years or so - so I know a little about 'writing' in general. Your sphere is much wider because you are writing from your imagination, therefore it will probably be a lot more fun. Watch your phraseology and make it easy for readers to understand what you are trying to convey and be correct - people don't 'acquire the power of senses' they are born with them. Shorten your sentences a little but most of all keep that imagination active - you can do it - and remember that children are perhaps the biggest 'audience' you will have and have a go at their market too - remember Harry Potter - all it took was imagination and a firm knowledge of the English language.  Good Luck and keep us informed as to how you are getting on.

Connor, good for you for actually doing rather than thinking about it. I have some experience of writing, and the hardest part for me has always been disciplining myself to get the work done.

The best advice I can give you is be yourself, find your voice, and don't worry about editing as you write (my biggest downfall) and just get it done.
If you can set yourself a goal of at least 500 words per day that would be helpful.
When you write something, put it away for a few weeks before you look at it again. You will have fresh eyes.

Good luck, and here's a website which may be helpful for you:

I read Stephen King's On Writing - a book I recommend to anyone who wants to become a novelist or short story writer as a career. He says that it's vital to get to the point right from Page 1. I've tried doing that and I think its a great piece of advice.

Thank you Linda. I am disciplining myself strictly, I have to write 2,000 words a day or I think I've failed.
