Grabcopy - bit random i know - but how did you get into copyediting/writing?
I was a journalist down The Smoke. Then I was a copywriter for Marconi cos I wanted to be more creative. Then I thought I was going to be made redundant, so I became an editor for an appalling company in Cheshire who actually did make me redundant, six weeks after my little boy was born. So then I went freelance as a copywriter and it's just fab. I've had my garage converted into an office. I potter downstairs, think about starting some work around 9.30-9.45, do an hour, watch some tennis, do another hour, play with the cats, have a sandwich, do a few hours in the afternoon, pick the kids up from school and take them to their tennis lessons (oh yes!). There's no office politics, no commuting, no appraisals, no funny looks for coming in at 9.05am, no having to socialise with people you despise... and I earn about 2.5x what I did in my last job.
Care to find fault with that?

Lol, no sounds wonderful
Reckon I have any chance of getting into the journalism business with a history degree?
(Just checking out some options....not that I have the skills to be a journalist.....but it interests me

Well, yes, why not? You could always do the one-year postgraduate diploma - there's a good one at the Univeristy of Central Lancs and I think the other is in Cardiff. It's a good career cos it really open up options. Imagine you get made redundant at 40, like I did. It's tricky, cos you're not just going to walk into another job - but if you have a skill that you can do on a freelance basis, Robert's your dad's brother.

Go for it - there are some many opportunities, so much trade press, so much online journalism. People have never had so much to say.
And now I'm going to limber up with some Belgian beer. Then I'm going to peer at a blurred ball through Eurosport's foggy contact lenses while a commentator who's had a personality-ectomy hoovers up in the commentary box.
I just love Eurosport.

Lol! Wunderbar.....I can't imagine the beer will help with the fuzziness! Although it might numb the commentary a bit....

Er, before I go, however, I just have one thing to add...
