Thanks Aileen for the link to the programme "Stumps".  I actually think that I didn't check it at the time you posted it ...
But it does look interesting and so let's have the link here again so that I don't have to keep scrolling back for it, and so that other MW cricket fans can see it too Smile
It's "Stumped" not "Stumps", which was my mistake originally, but here's the link - https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02gsrmh

The West Indies won the 1st Test Match (out of 3) by 4 wickets.  Stokes took 4 wickets.  I didn't see any of the match ........

The next Test Match with the West Indies will be on the 16th July - quite soon now.

What is it about England captains that they seem unable to interpret the actions of umpires. These were walking up and down getting out a light meter and Joe Root, when it is dim, starts a new over with Jofra Archer!  He needed to do the sensible thing and put on a spinner for one over then if the light recovers you can put the quicks back on. Now half an hour has been wasted and the chances of a result diminished. If the slow bowlers leak too many runs put back on the quicks and then get taken off.

Absolutely crazy last night. I agree with the Test Match Special folk that having put in all the lighting to grounds that should be an considered an acceptable standard when they are on otherwise why spend so much on them.

PS Having studied lighting I think it is time for Cricket Authorities to be aware that illumination on a working (horizontal)  plane is not an accurate reference to light quality. Yet another example where a simple measurement is used as an absolute inappropriately rather than to assess the quality of light for the job in hand?  This is what we do now in life.

Well, yet more poor captaincy by bowling Woakes and Archer too long. As soon as their efforts looked tame it should have been either Anderson, Broad or Bess on quickly to keep the batsmen under pressure.

At least Broad has now shown his value with the last four wickets so England are now batting again. Still could win this from current position but I expect rain to be a problem tomorrow and frustrate any attempt to win.

Broad now has 496 Test Match wickets. Well done!

Broad takes more wickets - now on 499!

England in a good position but need time on the pitch without rain in Manchester. Two days available but tomorrow the weather forecast is bad. Keep an eye on this one?

The team marches on with a victory over Pakistan and have the second test this week (Thursday I think).  Some woeful captaining for both sides in that first test. Cricket has a large 'mental' element where being perceived as on top is vital.  These two captains should study Australian cricket a bit to see how that is done? Personally i have never thought Root a suitable captain but the choice of another is limited.

However England without Stokes for the two remaining matches will need to be good to win all these. well worth keeping an eye on it.

I just do not know how Test Matches always end up on the worst days to play them weather-wise.

With my background that included studying the design, measurement and regulation of lighting I do have a constantly repeating irritation as process again is creating a wrong result. Each time they use a light meter to measure the light they are using such a crude process and one not entirely relevant to quality of light needed to play the game.

Light is three dimensional and that meter measurement is of the quantity on a 'working plane'. Calculation, measurement and what we perceive all correlate only loosely, i.e. not accurately, so a judgement of suitability to play needs a large measure of interpretation.
For instance It is not illogical that play could be deemed not possible from one end only due to backgrounds of sky and ground differing with ends of the pitch. Have you tried to face a fast bowler with the sun setting anywhere close to the eyeline?  That does not show on the light meter. One simple example there are many others!

Many of the commentators are really angry that grounds now have lighting for one day cricket but it does not allow the Tests to continue. I understand that but they need to look a little more carefully at what is happening. The first step is to get rid of the current light meter rule and use common sense and personal human evaluation again?  It could lead to another set of arguments but at least cricket would survive. Care is needed not to lose the supporting public and financially support for the game. These last four days at Southampton has done that cause no good whatever.
