The European Championships of 2008

Well, if head-to-head is the most accurate reflection of results to seperate teams level on points, then that has to be the rule. You can't just change things for reasons like dead rubbers.

Yes, it really was brilliant. And i'm so angry i didn't concentrate fully on the game because of a stupid argument on here.

So, Friday's quarter-final has been decided - Croatia vs Turkey.

Tomorrow will decide who will face Portugal in the Thursday quarter-final:
If Germany don't lose, it'll be Germany.
Otherwise Austria, unless Poland win by a bigger margin then Austria, in such a way that their overall goal difference and goals scored is at least equal to Austria's, in which case Poland will advance.

Yeah what a game. I sat and watched it. The last 10 minutes were amazing. What a howler from Cech.

So was there an argument on here then?

It was actually basically an argument about news coverage of the home nations, but it was an absolute waste of time, and I'm upset I spoilt the match for myself.

Ah, I remember that starting off.

Germany have taken the lead. 1-0 Ballack!

So, on Thursday we have Portugal vs Germany. On Friday it's Croatia vs Turkey. The winners of those games will play in the first semi on Wednesday.

Tomorrow is interesting:
If Romania win, they qualify.
If Romania draw, and France vs Italy is a draw, again Romania qualify.
If Romania don't win, and France vs Italy does not end level, the winner of France vs Italy will qualify.
If Romania lose and France vs Italy is a scoring draw, then Italy qualify, irrespective of Romania's loss margin.
If Romania lose and France vs Italy is a non-scoring draw, then if Romania lose 3-0 or by 4 goals or more, Italy qualify. Otherwise Romania qualify.

What a boring game that was. I actually feel asleep in the 2nd half, although possibly because I was up late then got up super early to watch the golf. Whistle

Most exciting part was the bust up between the Germand and Austrian coaches which resulted in both getting sent to the stands. Don't know what it was all about. It seemed like the German coach went to argue with the 4th official and the Austrian coach didn't like this so then then both ended up in the same technical area having an argument and the ref sent them both off. lol

I have a big problem: The BBC say that if France and Italy both get eliminated today, but draw each other, they will have penalties to determine who finishes 3rd and who 4th. They say the reason its important to know this is for UEFA coefficients. However, the position you finish in the group never comes into the calculations at all. There are no coefficients or rankings or seedings anywhere at all used by UEFA or FIFA which differentiate between a 3rd and a 4th place finish in a group!
Has anyone seen this anywhere besides the BBC?

Well thats weird! But I suppose you need to know who comes 3rd and 4th!

Can you imagine that scenario happening though? Both teams are out and then the ref tells them to take pens to see who finishes bottom of the group. Like they will be caring about that.

It is weird! But why do we have to know who comes bottom? The BBC say it matters for the coefficients, but thats not true - it makes not one iota of difference for coefficients whether you finish 3rd or 4th.

Well, how would Uefa post the group up on their website, if we dont know whos 3rd and 4th. I know it dosent matter to anyone, but technically some people will need to know!
