I think he's pretty special.  I can't say otherwise - or I'd be lying.  Would I want it to be so in Andy's era - of course not.  However, I'm not going to berate him and get on board with the bashing and looking for stuff that I can get all bitter and twisted about.  Not my bag.  Kudos to the guy.  He deserves everything he's worked for.

Agree with most of that - he is exceptional, amazing player and record.

I really enjoyed seeing him rise after the mind bending boredom of the Sampras era. A magician on the court. That made more disappointing to see the way he sometimes reacted when things went less  well for him. So didn't need to needĺe like that.

My hunch is success went to his head a bit - it can easily happen, we are human. But I think time (and a good few beat downs from Rafa and Nole) humbled him a bit more and he is better now for it.

Haha.  I still don't get what you want this man to apologise for?  Iv'e no idea about your way of thinking, other than others need to be to downbeat when others say so.  Eh????

If you scroll back to my link to Nigel's article, that gives a taste of some of the criticisms people on here tend to make.

However, I don't think any of it requires a truth and reconciliation committee!! Smile

I'm not interested, alt.  I'll make my own mind up.  I do have the ability to do that in keeping with my own moral code.  Very Happy

Oof. Giles Simon out of Umag on day 1.  He really is toppling at a scary rate.
Goodness - knocked out by 24 year old qualifier Marco Cecchinato, ranked #105!   Seems a rather strange scoreline though 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.  Must have a look at the replay and see what happened.  Also wondered why his name sounded vaguely familiar so checked him out, and in July last year he was given an 18 month ban plus a fine of €40,000 by the Italian Tennis Federation for illegal behaviour including match fixing and match betting.  He was though entitled to appeal and must have been successful because according to his record he played through to the end of the 2016 season and all of this one.   He's also a clay-court specialist, having won his 9 Challengers and Futures titles on that surface, so that might go some way to explaining Simon's loss.

Losing early in 250s and 500 events is nothing new for Gilles, he has been doing it for years. The more worrying thing for him is that he is no longer getting good results in the Masters and Slams to help keep his ranking up. This is mainly because he is now getting much tougher draws in the mandatory events due to his lower ranking.

Thanks Matthew.  Unfortunately given his age I can't realistically see his prospects improving.

Well he's a particularly awful person, with a gargantuan ego, so not surprised to hear he was a prick to Jo.
