ATP/WTA Tour - The Other Players

Was hoping to watch Denis Shapovalov this evening, but I can't see a stream on Tennis TV.  Challenger Gatineau.  What do people think of him?  I know 2017 didn't start well for him, but I think he's got potential.

^ My heart went out to him when he hit the Umpire in the face, unwittingly.  Young pup, and I bet he won't be losing the head again!

That's what I thought. He comes across as quite genuine in his media.  I think his match is being streamed on the ATP site, but appears to be delayed.

I hope we see more of him.  I have an order of preference: if Andy's playing I want him to win, failing that Domi Thiem, failing that Denis Shapovalov.  Which I suppose is obvious from my username.

He just did a stupid thing that had consequences - it wasn't deliberate.

I guessed your order of preference!  Very Happy

Have to say Sascha Zverev is my one to watch.  I think he may be immense, given time and experience.

It will be interesting to see what Juan Carlos Ferrero adds to his game - but Zverev just doesn't do it for me. Not enough variety, and hopeless at the net.

I can't say that I've enough technical knowledge to argue.  Armchair pundit, is me!   Dunno - just something about him that draws me in.  Presumably he's young enough for his game to still be developed?

Yes, I understand that.  I do think he's going to be No 1, though.

Same here, and I thought it was very kind of the umpire involved to help him get over the distress he felt, although had his eye been damaged he might not have been so generous!  He's definitely learnt a lesson though, and in fact says keeping his cool has made him a better player.

lol  I kind of figure that out too!

He's one of mine as well, even if we do seem to be missing some of the technicalities of his game.  Like you I just like to watch tennis and so have my favourite players based on what I see,

Well done to 19 year old LL Andrey Rublev for winning his first ATP tournament in Umag, defeating Paolo Lorenzi in straight sets.  He seems to have slipped under my radar so could be another one to watch out for.  In fact I think I'll watch a replay on TennisTV.

Well done too to young Shapovalov for winning his second Challenger title against fellow Canadian Peter Polansky.  Didn't watch it but just caught up with the score.

I often wonder what he might have achieved if he had given 100%.

Probably quite a lot given that he has the talent, but if tennis bores him, then you'd think he'd go off and do something else instead of trying to carry on feeling 'trapped', a situation I couldn't understand until I read this article in today's Sydney Morning Herald - http://www.smh.com.au/sport/tennis/bernard-tomics-tv-interview-shows-how-tortured-hes-become-20170724-gxhncq.html
