ATP/WTA Tour - The Other Players

Quote

Probably quite a lot given that he has the talent, but if tennis bores him, then you'd think he'd go off and do something else instead of trying to carry on feeling 'trapped', a situation I couldn't understand until I read this article in today's Sydney Morning Herald - http://www.smh.com.au/sport/tennis/bernard-tomics-tv-interview-shows-how-tortured-hes-become-20170724-gxhncq.html

Thanks for posting that article Aileen.  I was thinking the same - he should go and do something else.  It did explain a lot.

It's all rather sad really.  A perfect example of a poor little rich boy.  I just hope that, like Agassi, something will happen which could help turn things around for him, the difference being that Agassi did win six Slams before he married Steffi, and nor did he ever come across as being in any way disenchanted with the sport, at least not in the way that Tomic has.

Agassi  hid  his feelings well.  I remember reading his book and being surprised when he said he had hated tennis.   He looks so contented with life now.

His biography is the best tennis one I have read.

It raises uncomfortable issues, not least the extent to which quite a few top players (by no means all) have had borderline abusive pressure placed on them by relatives.

But all the better for such an honest account.

I agree.  I don't read a lot of biographies, but a friend recommended this one.

It's called 'Open: An Autobiography' and there seems to be heaps of second  hand copies available on online.

John McEnroe's autobiography "Serious" is worth a read too, particularly as it shows a side of him that most of us never knew about.  Also explains why he was constantly arguing with umpires.

Thanks Aileen.   I see that is widely available too.

Novak pulls the plug on his 2017 season, will be back on tour in 2018. In hindsight he may wish he'd decided to stop for 5/6 months after Rio last year.

Incidentally Fed annouced the same thing on the same day last year...

Novak's statement here:

The USO will be the first major he has missed since he played his first slam at the AO in 2005.

Yes. He now has an updated version out - 'But Seriously' - not sure how much different it is or isn't.

Interesting that Agassi will still be his head coach and will help him to 'bounce back'.

Sadly insight is a wonderful thing, particularly as Andy has said, in the light of all that's happened to him, he would have 'done things differently' at the end of last season.

According to this unimpressed reviewer it "rehashes many of the stories from the first autobiography and adds in tales from the seniors circuit".  He also talks about some of the things he's done since he retired and gives a string of anecdotes about all the different celebs he's met.  Basically, again to quote the reviewer in his conclusion - "The brash, insecure kid from Queens once again disproves that old saw about there being no second acts in American life. There are, but as this second autobiography shows, it’s usually just the first act reworked in a new setting."

I'm sad for them both. Certain if Agassi had been in either camp, rest would have preempted chronic injury. Sigh.
