ATP/WTA Tour - The Other Players

Quote

Probably this should go on the tennis news thread but given its relevance to INDIAN WELLS I decided to post it here as well as on the corona thread.

"The organisers have drawn up measures to combat the spread of the virus, including that fact that the ball boys and girls will wear gloves and will not handle players' towels."

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/07/tennis/indian-wells-coronavirus-tennis-spt-intl/index.html

I'm looking forward to Indian Wells because it'll be nice to focus on something other than the coronavirus.  I actually feel awash in information about the virus and the constant media attention to it.  Isn't there any other news around these days …
But I think the ball boys and girls to wear gloves is a sensible precaution.  & not handling the players' towels is also a good idea - but yes, the ball boys and girls might like to touch these towels as in some ways it makes them feel closer to the players - but it's sensible for the players to look after their own towels.  & anyway I think the players should always look after their own towels - both now and at future tournaments, and after all this corona thing has gone away.

There is so much panic over this virus. People need to use common sense. If you are older and have health issues you don’t go on cruises or put yourselves in situations where you might get exposed. Wash your hands with real soap and water. When you look at deaths from the regular flu compared to this new strain there’s no comparison. It is too bad about Indian Wells I was looking forward to watching it.

So now that there's no ATP tennis for at least six weeks here are some of the players' reactions  -

The WTA seems to have cancelled some tournaments, but is currently still planning to go ahead with the start of the European clay season beginning in Stuttgart on 20th April.

Do you think the WTA will start in Stuttgart on the 20th April?  Why would they do that do you think - when the ATP won't start until early June, at the earliest?

I shall be very sad if either Men's or Women's high level tennis starts again before there is a measure of control of the spread of this virus pandemic. The idea is preposterous, probably driven by things financial that are not only to benefit players.

It is what goes with the tennis that will be harmful. Many will be travelling to events from some countries previously blighted others from places comparatively free of it. This virus is invisible to those people so not easy to identify who might bring it or whom you may catch it from.  Eating, drinking and socialising between players and support staff will inevitably spread it around the world more. If tournaments are with paying crowds at the venue that risk is multiplied many times over. If only on TV and Amazon Prime there will be more social gatherings to replace going to the event. More risk? Remember we have stopped televised football without crowds for that very reason.

Sorry, I forgot to post here at the time - think I put it in the Tennis News thread - that everything is cancelled until the start of the grass season. Wimbledon will decide this week at an emergency board whether to postpone or cancel. Once they’ve announced it’ll impact what happens - no Wimbledon no grass season.

Given what is going on in New York I’d be extremely surprised if the USO goes ahead.

Seeing a lot of suggestions that neither tour will resume - if at all - before December and that the traditional off-season could be used to pack in a lot of missed tournaments - probably the big ones like IW/Miami.

I find it very hard to believe that the virus won't be well out of the way long before then, particularly if all the measures put in place by our and other governments have the desired effect.  Nor can I see players playing a load of tournaments crammed into that period and then continue right on with the 2021 schedule, unless it too is amended.

My main worry though is if that this prolonged gap should happen, then we could lose a lot of up and coming young players who will be forced to look for other employment in order to bring in the money to enable them to live, and that would be a tragedy for the sport - and tennis isn't the only sport which will suffer the same fate either.

Life is so weird right now. For the first time in many years I bought season tickets to our open air theatre that shows broadway shows, and two of the shows have been cancelled already. Schools are cancelled as we shelter at home and students learn via computer and their parents helping them. I went to the vet the other day to pick up pills for my dog and I had to stay in my car and call them and they brought out the pills to me.  Stay safe and well everyone.

Nice to hear from you Apollo.  Things are really awful here too with just about everything shut down from non-essential shops to schools, universities, theatres, cinemas and sports facilities.  Social distancing too has been causing a lot of difficulties, so I can relate to what happened to you at the vets.  Supermarkets are also having serious problems when it comes to delivering food ordered online, as well as putting a block on the number of the more commonly bought items which you can purchase thanks to the ridiculous amount of panic buying which started here at the beginning of the month.
