ATP/WTA Tour - The Other Players

"Everybody says they work very hard - I do the same - but I try not to shout about it."

Typical Federer, now the SmugFed has returnth and will forever be amongst us yuk
I don't get what he meant by that comment or who he was having a go at? Any ideas?

Could it be Sir Andy?    I'll bet that sticks in Fed's craw.    He is despicable.

well humble brag is back - no surprise there.
holmsy true that scheduling isn't the main explanation for Andy going out when he did but I can't help but think that Zverev might not have been able to play his game so successfully in a night match and it could have made the difference,  That said I wouldn't want to have seen a tired Andy beaten by a resurgent smugfed.

Well to say that i am disappointed in this result is an understatement. Roger Federer winning his 18th GS.  yuk
I guess that he's going to be favourite for Wimbledon now.
How is it possible that a guy who has had nearly a year out of the game can come back and win in the very first GS of the year. According to all the commentators it usually takes at least 6 months to reach your peak and start playing anywhere near your best again.
And he was getting to the balls out wide better than i have seen him do for years. Very fast and agile on his feet. Age obviously suits his game.
Well I didn't watch the AO this year and I'm glad now that i didn't.
All the Federer fawning would have been to much for me.
Was thinking the same Caroline, look how long it took for Muzz , I know he had surgery, but seems bizarre to bad able to just get back to that level !!

Thing is Andy doesn't shout about it at all.

Just finished watching my recording. What a fantastic match! I was rooting for Rafa to win, but Roger won fair and square. The way he fought back in the 5th was incredible. It was nice to relax and watch a great tennis match without the angst of watching Andy.

I also really liked Roger's speech when he said he would have been happy if it had been a draw.

Well done to both. It's good to see them back at the top of their games and back in the mix. Tennis needs Rafa and Roger. clap

I don't think he was having a go at anyone - just commenting that he works hard like everyone else. Sometimes that gets lost because the media/commentators talk so much about his talent - but it's backed up by a lot of hard work. And I imagine he's had to work harder than ever to get back to this form after his surgery.

I thought his speech was very good and I didn't get the sense he was being boastful/smug at all. Very respectful of Rafa and all he's achieved.

It will. Especially since he has cultivated the gentlemanly, statesman image.

I thought that as well but it just shows how a comment without clarification can be interpreted in different ways.  I get the feeling over the years that Roger and Andy have had a slightly prickly relationship but just put that down to two athletes utterly determined to beat each other and come out on top. Still a respect there for each other and any on court spats quickly get forgotten. I remember match at the Aussie Open a few years ago when Andy won in 5 and they were both snarling and chuntering at each other and the umpire. Also a famous spat between Andy and Juan Martin Del Potro when Del Potro made some comment about Judy. Del Potro congratulated Andy both on becoming Wimbledon Champion and becoming number 1 on twitter. Federer did the same when Andy reached number 1. Don't think todays speech was meant as a dig at anyone.

^    Fed has always made statements which can be interpreted in different ways.     Andy did admire Fed when he was young but I think Fed's antipathy to him stemmed from the number of times Andy beat him as a youngster.    As much as Fed enjoyed Mischa Zverev's play in the first week of the AO. and said how good it was to see the lower ranked players stepping up to defeat top players, he did not find it so enjoyable when he was on the receiving end.

Smuggers wins!

'I'd be happy to draw' comment ...laughable...utter ******** to gain adulation. I've watched him soo many times spit the dummy when things aren't going his way to believe that for second.
'I work hard like everyone else' statement... or... 'i train too...im just better at tennis than everyone.'

Very fortunate he had a 6 month holiday... combined with Djoko and Andy were out of form due to mental physical tiredness. Nadal still isn't the player he was in his prime either.

I also notice he has come up with an excuse recently for his famous repeated defeats against Rafa - saying that he played him too many times early on on clay and that had some kind of lasting effect. Pretty poor considering how totally owned he has been in slams against Rafa for ten years, until today.

I couldn't face the speech though I agree it was a really good match and it was a relief in a way not to care that much who won so I could enjoy the tennis and none of the stress involved in watching our Andy.
I think Fed's attitude towards Andy has changed.  To begin with he treated him like some kind of uncouth upstart who had no business in beating him.  But I think he has come to respect him - witness his invitation to play in his charity match this Spring and also I think he talks about him in a very different way these days.

It WAS the scheduling. The decision to play Doha (with a 3hr slugfest of a final versus Joker) was completely loopy.

that's nothing to do with the scheduling of the AO - I think you've misunderstood what was being said  confused
