ATP/WTA Tour - The Other Players

Quote

It just shows how important it is to have the big four fully fit. Fed won this match far to easily cannot understand why he thought it was important to win. The real competition were all injured apart from Nadal.

He had no real competition so I think this win was no real achievement  an easy win for him.

I think it's unfair to call this no 'real achievement'. He did meet challenging players like Sasha Zverev, Raonic, Dimitroc and Berdych and beat them all in straights. Regardless of the fact that they weren't playing well or weren't in form, Fed won against every player he faced and no doubt, he played very well.

Remember, Andy didn't face any of the top 4 in Wimbledon last year. It isn't fair if anybody called that 'no real achievement'.

Maybe Fed had it easy, but no doubt this is an achievement. I dislike the guy and am disappointed he won (easily) but credit where credit's due.

The injuries rather wrecked the men's competition.

All those dodgy early withdrawals, then the last two winners go out on the same day crocked.

Then Cillc can't even compwte in the final. Not Fed's fault of course and he has well earned grass GOAT status. But this was a sad tournament for mens singles - especially when you consider what is normally needed to win it
Definitely not the best Wimbledon for everyone, except for Federer and his fans - and I'm not being sarcastic either because the truth is out there for all to see.

From what I've been reading I think serious questions are going to be raised about players who go into tournaments knowing they can't compete properly because of injury and so retire during matches in the early rounds, because quite apart from the money aspect they're depriving other players of a chance to compete.

Hard to imagine theres no pain killer for a blister?  It's a shame for Cilic he could't cope mentally with this.

I don't think that it is fair to say it was 'no real achievement'. Using your logic, Andy's win last year would be branded the same thing. Both Andy's draw from last year and Roger's from this year are very similar in terms of quality of opponent.

Exactly. We can't have it both ways.

Another comparision would be Andy's run of titles last autumn before the O2 - didn't face a top ten player during his rise to #1, until he secured the YE1 at the WTF.

It is possible to respect the achievements of other players even if you aren't a fan of those players, without it impacting upon either Andy's achievements or our own support of him.

With Wimbledon finished, at least there are some interesting tournaments this week, all of which TennisTV are streaming, although Umag does it for me, it's other advantage being that play doesn't start until 5pm local time (4pm BST), presumably to give those at work a good chance of watching it.

Yeh.

Equally it is fair to point out if players disrespect others achievements in that regard e.g. Fed's dismissal of Andy's good run in Asia a few years back

I'm pretty sure Andy has kept a respectful tone towards others achievements, even when going through tough times himself.

Yeah, things in the past just don't cut it for me.  It's no more justification than dredging up Andy's old football joke to rationalise why he's an English-hating, arrogant person.  Move on.

Thanks, but I'll pass on your invitation to forget anything that's a bit inconvenient for Fed worshippers.

Here is a more developed set of comments from our own Nigel

The most useful thing about Roger Faust is the way the parallels of his achievements with Serena's rapidly expose the bigots. It's got to the point where I can weigh up a stranger's character in 2 sentences.  Whistle

Not the same thing, DB.    Andy's remark was a joke between friends.    Fed's comments were his opinion on the achievement of one of his peers.    It is obvious that he is an exceptional tennis player and that is acknowledged.     It is also obvious that he is a nasty person and a very poor sport but that is not acknowledged.
