ATP/WTA Tour - The Other Players

My personal view is that given Murray's past, and the internal torments he has had to fight since he was a lad, he has done incredibly well. I don't really give a t*ss what happens hereafter. He has got two GS's and Gold and Silver Olympic Medals. If he gets more great, but he has nothing more to prove as far as I am concerned.  More to the point I don't think he has got anything to prove to himself. 

I watched Djokovic rolling over Berdych in the Davies Cup final and I thought our man has beaten him in two GS Finals and an Olympic Semi.  Djokovic has yet to take a set off Murray on grass courts.  Quite honestly I was awed by what our man has done. I think the whole GOAT debate is a bit of a simplistic way of looking at things. He is good enough for me:-)

Murray has a bit too do to be included in the all time greats debate, in my opinion. But that doesn't really matter. He's already in the GREAT discussion with top players such as Hewitt, Safin etc.

All I'm doing is not denying facts. By factual statistics Roger is the GOAT. I think a large part of everyone's views are based on the hate of the man, not his achievements. Which makes for a poor argument.

I have never liked Roger's on-court persona, which got more arrogant as his career progressed, but have always greatly admired his style of tennis and have no hesitation in recognising all his achievements.  Fortunately I've been able to see the player beyond the man, something I have never been able to do with Nadal - but then I don't find his tennis a pleasure to watch and his OCDs drive me nuts.

I agree with you that players from different eras cannot be compared since each era has had its own greatest player or players.

I agree entirely with the first part of your post but not that bit because I believe that he does have more to prove, i.e. that he's capable of winning more Slams.  Fortunately he's on record as saying that this is his aim, and not in becoming #1 as so many people think, because if he didn't have this motivation then my feeling is that he might as well hang up his racquet right now because he'd lose a lot of hard-won respect and supporters as well if all he was interested in was turning up at tournaments for the appearance fee, playing two or three indifferent matches and then going out.  Luckily Andy is by nature too competitive to do this, although a little more consistency from him would be welcome.

@ Aileen. I agree with you. I think he will do his damdest to get more. I think what I was trying to say was more that the whole focus of his personal world for year, after relentless year was winning a GS. Whatever happens from here on he has proven to himself and others he can win them. As he himself said after the first "I could retire happy now". Hopefully for him and us there will be many more.  Smile

I think it was more me not making myself clear. I really do hope that he can relax and enjoy his tennis now. Mind you hopefully with the back sorted, his fans can relax and enjoy his tennis a bit more as well...!!!

I hope so too.  Wimbledon was a more than usual nail-biting time for me because I was worried that his back might pack in at any moment, and I so desperately wanted him to win it since I had a strong feeling that if he didn't do it this year then he might lose a lot of the valuable support he'd gained last year, which in turn would have impacted on his future chances of doing so.

Not ATP - but has anyone been watching the Statoil Masters at the Albert Hall?

I missed the Henman/Wilanders match, but the Rafter/Ivanisevic was very entertaining in more ways than one.  Goran is as humorous as ever, but lost 7-6, 6-4 to an inspired Rafter, who will play Henman in tomorrow's final.  I love watching these guys play.  Not only are their matches much less stressful, but that's the style of tennis I really enjoy watching. 

Nice to see Jamie Murray partnering Mansour Bahrami - 57 and still going strong!



Btw - Ivanisevic will now be coaching Marin Cilic.

@Aileen I am enjoying the Statoil Masters. I am confused by Jamie M's involvement. I thought it was for players who were retired from the main tour.

It's great to watch some tennis without any stress.
