Quitting tennis lessons in 2 weeks to go private. I will miss the friends I have had for four years, but I want to improve my game.

Playing tennis this evening having not picked up the racquet for 2 years so it could be interesting! Haven't played the last 2 summers due to a bad back injury from football, which sounds very similar to what Andy has, except of course surgery wasn't necessary for me so I was told to take a year off sport for it to heal instead.

Could have played last summer but I chose to give it more time to be ready for the football season (which I play more seriously) this year which I got through in 1 piece. Anyway going to the local club's club night tonight to start getting back into playing. I have moved a couple of times since I last played and my previous club is now too far away.

Not really wanting to play inter-club competitions this season as I wouldn't be up to it. Just wanting to play socially at a club to get back into it then maybe think about playing competitive next summer.

Great feeling to be playing again. As expected I wasn't much good after the long lay-off but hit the ball a little better than I'd thought. Have never had any coaching so might look into some private lessons with an aim to being able to hit the ball well enough to have a decent game on club days. Particular emphasis on serving (which I've never been any good at) and forehand. I'm a bit unusual in that I have always had a naturally strong backhand (same in table tennis) and tend to run around everything to hit one so I can avoid using my hopeless forehand. Backhand and volleys didn't take to long to become passable last night.

I'm wanting to change from a 2HBH to a 1HBH, does anyone have any tips that could make the transition easier?

Found this quite interesting and informative, made me change my forehand a bit as I do have a slight problem with dealing with pace.

Pro tip folks: Don't **** your shoulder up. I've had so many physio appointments it's ridiculous. Ultimately the most effective recovery was from getting it in motion even if it hurt.

I'm currently having lessons to learn a proper forehand. OMG, things have changed.

For 40 years, I've had a Borg-like open stance. That's all gone now. It's all side-on, racket at arm's length, loopy backswing and lift the ball with arm at full extension. It feels so foreign.
