Davis Cup 2013

Quote

This all starts tomorrow. Last year GB lost to Belgium, who then beat Sweden and got promoted to the World Group.

I'm glad it's Belgium, not GB, playing Serbia this weekend!

World Group
Canada v Spain
Italy v Croatia
Belgium v Serbia
USA v Brazil
France v Israel
Argentina v Germany
Kazakstan v Austria
Switzerland v Czech Rep

Not a lot happening in the Europe/Africa Group 1, as 5 of the 8 teams have byes.

Sorry, that doesn't make sense! 5 teams have byes, 6 teams are playing.

Serbia really not happy about the court for their tie v Belgium, due to start in an hour.

From Djoko's facebook:
the conditions for play are quite dangerous not only for me and my team, but also for the hosts. I am certain that clay court had to be better, although I do believe that people from organization did their best. Unfortunately, sometimes that is not enough and now we are all facing a very tough challenge ahead of us - how to avoid getting injured.
Health should be everyones priority and I am sad that this weekend we will not be able to perform a good quality tennis for the people who looked forward to this tie and bought tickets.

Tsonga and Berdych both having to work a bit harder than expected today!

Tsonga pushed to 4 sets by Amir Weintraub, (ISR ranked 173), winning  6-3 6-3 4-6 7-5

Berdych had to save a break point when serving at 5-3 for the 1st set against 20 yr old Laaksonen (SWI, ranked 289). Took 2nd set fairly easily, but 3rd set going with serve 4-4 at the moment.

Wow, Laaksonen wins 3rd set tiebreak v Berdych!

That court looks terrible! I know Novak was complaining about it yesterday and it definitely looks like his worries are justified.

Berdych has a habit of losing sets/matches to people he shouldn't have but definitely surprising to see him lose a set to someone so low ranked today! He won in the end though - looking forward to his match with Stan on Sunday, should be interesting.

Looks like for the first time in years Spain isn't going to make it out of round one - down 0-2 at the moment to Canada. Milos beat Ramos which was expected but Granollers lost easily to Dancevic which is a surprise.

I watched the Dancevic/Granollers match, Katie.

Dancevic was a beast!! No-one could believe what they were seeing.

Granted Nadal, Ferrer, Amalgro and Verdasco are no-shows.. but it's still going to be funny seeing Canada lead Spain.

Oh. Why are Almagro, Ferrer, Lopez and Andujar not playing?

Dancevic is a great player when he sets his mind to it. Won the Dallas-2 Challenger last year which featured 11 top 100 players including Cilic and Troicki.

He beat Cilic en route, in-fact.

I didn't see the match myself because of the time difference but I've heard that Dancevic really played a great match. Davis Cup seems to bring out the best in some players! Must have felt great for him to do so well in front of his home fans. Smile

Almagro was due to play but had to pull out due to injury. Ferrer said ahead of the tie that he wasn't going to play, and might not for the whole year - understandable given the amount of tennis he's played over the past year. No idea about Lopez or Andujar though, and also I'd have thought Verdasco could've been selected too?

Forgot about Verdasco.

Strange choosing Ramos, who has been woefully out of form for a while now, and Granollers who is a bit flaky.
