Davis Cup 2015

Quote

I don't think Andy was being "petty" he puts his heart and sole into the Davis Cup. He will be tired if he plays at the WTF. He's not the Duracell Bunny who can go on forever he's human after all and he needs a good rest. It's not long after Christmas when the new season starts again in Australia.

Petty or not, I still think he was being unwise in making this comment in a BBC interview, particularly as the surface hasn't been officially announced yet.  Also he's going to look a bit silly if the surface turns out to be hard-court.  An even worse scenario for him would be if he missed the WTF and GB then lost the tie, given that our chance of winning seems to be about 50/50 anyway, with the doubles no doubt once again being crucial to the final outcome.

I would say we are bigger favourites than that. They don't have a proper doubles team and none of their players are even top 150 doubles players! And Goffin has never won a doubles match in his whole career!

Anyway, I find it a bit presumptuous of Andy to automatically assume that Leon Smith will select him for the final.
Heh heh, yes some Federer style arrogance from Andy there! He might get a game if Evans is injured I suppose.

I respect your opinion, but if that's the case I'm a bit surprised they got to the finals in the first place.

Embarassed  In mitigation I've had a rather stressful day .....

Why has Andy says he'll need  time to prepare for a Davis Cup final on clay. The Belgians will definetly pick clay now because they know he won't have time to prepare properly after the WTF. Its a bit of a disaster all round that the Argies could not win their tie after being 2-1 up.

I think the Argies have a lot to answer for!

These are the players they have beaten en route to the final:

Lammer
Bossel
Lammer/Bossel
Dancevic
Peliwo
Nestor/Shamasdin
Delbonis
Schwartzman

Still surprised?

Compare that to who GB have beaten:

Isner
Young
Tsonga
Simon
Mahut/Tsonga
Kokkinakis
Tomic
Hewitt/Groth

Belgium's route sounds like a challenger.

For once, this one won't come down to the doubles - we'll breeze that. It'll come down to Murray vs Goffin. I believe Andy will have enough to win, even on clay.

@Matthew2408 - No, I'm no longer surprised, so thank you for taking the time to clarify the matter.

I was watching SSN today and Barry Cowan was saying Federer practiced on the clay before the Basel tournament last year.  Andy could do that.  Between Shanghai and Paris there's a 2 week gap with the 250 and 500 tournaments then.  With Jamie also in the WTF for the first time I can't see him pulling out of that.  He only has to play 1 match in the DC final though.  I would be disappointed if Andy did pull out the WTF.  It's a title that's eluded him going all the way back to the 2008 Masters Cup.

Belgium have beaten Switzerland without Federer and Wawrinka in round 1.

The results were:

3-2 to Switzerland in tie 1 when Henri Laaksonen beat Ruben Bemelmans
3-0 to Belgium in tie 2 when Steve Darcis beat Michael Lammer
3-1 to Belgium in tie 3 when Bemelmans and Niels Desein beat Adrien Bossel and Michael Lammer
3-2 to Switzerland in tie 4 when Henri Laaksonen beat Steve Darcis
3-0 to Belgium in tie 5 when David Goffin beat Adrien Bossel

In the QF they beat Canada in the first 3 ties.  Canada put out a team that consisted of Frank Dancevic who was beaten by Darcis 3-1 and Filip Peliwo who was beaten by Goffin 3-0.  In the doubles, Bemelmans and Kimmer Copeljans beat Nestor and Adil Shamasdin.

Not exactly a who's who in tennis apart from Daniel Nestor of the opponents so far.

Having read the names on Matthew's list, it strikes me that Evans, Edmunds or Ward could be in with a good chance of winning the other rubbers, and Dan certainly impressed against Tomic.  In fact I think he was very unlucky not to win the 4th set because Tomic was visibly starting to struggle by that stage, so if Dan had kept his level up I think Tomic would have crumbled in the 5th.  Also it seems to me that Dom could easily play with Jamie in the doubles, leaving Andy with a day's rest.

Goffin should beat our 2nd player. But Wardy, Evans and Edmund would all have a great shot against Darcis- especially Edmund who beat Darcis earlier on in the year on an Indoor hard court during the Irving Challenger. Incidentally Darcis beat Ward in the same tournament before losing to Edmund.
