Davis Cup 2015

As for the rest, they've never suffered from a serious back problem which required invasive surgery, and one which could well have ended his career, so is it a wonder he has concerns about a sudden change of surface?

I feel calling Andy stupid is a case of pot calling kettle black! Also the others you quoted did not have to carry the whole team. Djokovic had players in the team seeded way above ours, Berdych the same, and the Spanish had so many higher seeds. So how dare you tell Andy to stop whining when he has carried the team to the Finals.

I'll say what I like.

He did not carry the team to the Finals,  without James Ward, Dan Evans, Colin Fleming, Ross Hutchins etc we wouldn't have even been in the World Group, so lets not act like Andy did all the work.

He shot himself in the foot and that's fact.

Sorry BBH, but I'm not with you on this one!

He shouldn't have said anything and I'd be amazed if he somehow didn't already know that the WTF is a mandatory event.  So... I'm guessing tiredness and pain meant he just wasn't thinking straight.

I'm sure he will play WTF, and so he should because he's earned his place there just as much as the Davis Cup final.  I'm just a bit concerned if DC is on clay and he hasn't had enough time to adjust.  Frown

Not fact. Your interpretation as expressed through metaphor.

That's the only thing that makes any sense to me, and one reason why I wish the media would leave players alone in stressful situations like that.  Can't they give them at least 24 hours in which to settle down instead of jumping on them at the first opportunity?

I'm sure he will too, and also can you really see Leon, and the rest of the team, being happy if he chose to skip it for no good reason other than to adjust for the DC?  From what I've been hearing on here anyway the Belgians don't have a decent doubles pairing, so I'm sure Dom could play with Jamie and give Andy a day's rest.  Goffin really is their only weapon, and Andy beat him in straights in R1 at Wimbledon last year.  They should have met in Rome this year but, as you probably remember, Andy pulled out before their match citing fatigue.

No, he stated he's considering skipping a MANDATORY EVENT 2 months before said event. If he hadn't said a thing then there wouldn't be an issue. Now if he does withdraw due to injury both everyone on the ATP, the Tennis fan community, the Tennis community and the ATP know why he's skipped it.

ProdigyEng,
If he had not METAPHORICALLY shot himself in the foot (Althusser's point), that is, if he had LITERALLY shot himself in the foot, there would be no question about this unless players were allowed to use crutches.

No, I don't believe Leon would want him to make that sacrifice at all.

Really the best scenario would be if he participated at WTF and tried his best but didn't knacker himself in the process, and then went out early enough to give himself a few extra days on the clay.

I guess we'll see how it pans out...

I agree, but he doesn't usually do well at the WTF anyway, although I don't think we'll have the same scenario as we had last year when a knackered Andy lost badly to Federer, because this year he won't be playing six tournies in as many weeks in order to qualify!  In fact he said, before the DC tie, that Shanghai and Paris are the only ones he would play in the run up to the WTF.

If he's only playing two events between now and the WTF's I don't see why he'd need to skip the WTF's... it just makes no sense.

It probably won't make sense to him either once he's had time to rest, think about it and discuss it with his team, and no doubt Leon Smith, which is why I think he'll play.

I've read Belgium have decided to play the tie in Ghent, but isn't mentioned on the Davis Cup website (though they do have up to two weeks to decide).
It's expected that Belgium will announce the venue sometime today.
