Denis Shapovalov

Auckland 2019.  Watched a replay of Shap's match against Portugal's Joao Sousa (currently ranked #44) without knowing the score.  Very entertaining, just unfortunate that Sousa won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.  Denis though does need to work on his consistency - played a lot of sublime shots mixed in with some howling UEs, and served 11 aces along with 8 DFs.

He also had what could have been a nasty encounter with the boarding at the back of the court when he ran back to return a long high lob from Sousa, tripped and crashed the right side of his body into it.  Fortunately after a MTO and some treatment to his rib area he seemed to be OK.  He might have a few bruises though.

As for the hair, it looks like Denis is aiming to keep it fairly short, which is good because it really suits him.

.......... *** I thought you said you weren't bothered about the length of his hair, and that it was his tennis that counts ****
You see, our posts hang around forever here at MW lol

I read about that encounter with the boarding, but I only skimmed it.  It could have been nasty though.  I hope Shapo's ok.

Shapo's just young - he'll be all right.  He's nice to watch.

Of course it's his tennis that counts!  The comment about the hair was merely an aside.

Perhaps I shouldn't have been quite so hard on him though because he said in an interview I've just read that he was trying out some new things he'd worked on in the off-season, so it could take a little while for these to really kick in and for him to find out which ones work well for him and which don't.   Anyway onward to Melbourne!

Losing in 3 sets isn't bad really.  It's very early in the season and he needs time to get back to full ...... power.
Yes Good Luck Shapo - I'm looking forward to the AO 2019  yay yay

He's done well, though, so it will be good to see him upset Djokovic

Shapo lost in R3 at the AO today.  But he had to play Novak who is the #1 seed.  Shapo did take a set off Novak which is very good.  I think we can be happy with this Shap result because it shows he can play 5 set matches along with the rest of them.
I feel fairly confident and hopeful for Shap to continue to do well this year Smile  hug Heart
