I do feel sorry for you Iluvandy if you can't see the good side of people as well as the bad.  Also Wilde was so full of his own importance I doubt he cared tuppence for other people

I opened this thread after reading about The Roger Federer Foundation which he set up to help children in the more deprived areas of Africa, and in fact I seem to recall posting pics on this thread of him visiting one of the areas his Foundation helps, because I realised then that a big heart lay underneath all his on-court arrogance.

Caz - Andy did the same at Wimbledon about three years ago through the Make A Wish Foundation which he also supports.  In this case it was two 14 year olds from America who were cancer sufferers, and he chatted to them in private for quite a while before showing them round the place.  He also paid for them to have the best seats for that day as well as their travel expenses.  It was less than a couple of hours but the girls were abolutely thrilled to bits!

I do not need your commiserations Aileen but thank you all the same.    Oscar Wilde may well have been full of his own importance and may not have cared much for his fellow man but he was honest about it.    I just don't like being brainwashed by sob stories.

In what way was that story brain-washing?  OK so the girl was a bit OTT at times, but I can't say I blame her for feeling so excited.  Andy's two fans were every bit as excited to meet him, and, although their brief comments were made to a journalist, I bet they told plenty of other people about their experience at some length.

It feels like brainwashing in the way that a lot of "celeb" stories are written to give the reader a certain picture of the"celeb".    We have seen a lot of it in this country from our media.    I make my own idea of a person from my own observations and, so far, it has stood me in good stead and I will stick with it.

I thought it was a nice story. Roger is up himself as a tennis player (cos his fans/media /tournament organisers put him there and it went to his head - thought - was this what/who Andy meant when he told Lendl his biggest worry was that if he won a slam it would change him?) but I still think he is a fairly decent human being who recognises that so far life has dealt him a pretty decent card and he is in a position to make life a wee bit better for those who got a raw deal. That girl (like many others who have had similar experiences with a variety of players including Andy) had a wonderful time thanks to Roger. Credit where it's due.
