Well done Andy, hard match but you won in the end. Great to see him on the court again.

A fine job by Andy. I thought he looked pretty solid though he had the advantage of playing Tiafoe who is definitely mentally a bit wobbly at times. Courier (who has coached him in Davis Cup) says he has a tendency to let his concentration waver at the beginning of sets, especially if he's just won the previous set. And that certainly happened to him just now. Go Andy! (Although I daresay Zverev in the second round will be be a bit more of a tall order.)

Dan gets Andrei Rublev in the first round—another tough match for the Brits. Jo Konta gets a break though, she has a bye into the second round.

Looks like Azarenka is about to beat Donna Vekic. Venus Williams v. Yastremska coming up!

It was wonderful to watch Andy play again.  Didn't see hip issues.  Great spirit.  Tiafoe did well,  And it's a hot day in NY. Yeah, it's a win! Important to play matches.

Did anyone else watching tennis on Amazon find Mark Petchey irritating, at least in this match anyway?  He's a good commentator but could have done without his harping on about how he would like to see tennis revamped.  Also Tim Henman barely managed to get a word in!

Usual stories?

Andy frustrates an opponent who expected to win, Edmund totally without any mental strength so lost to a once far better player, and Cam Norrie not quite up to it with our best man Evans yet to play.

Dan was good with Goffin in the doubles so I have hopes for him in the singles.  I think if both he and Andy were to get through two matches they would play each other!

Saw all three matches by constant stop/start. I am really pleased for Andy especially with the draw being so hard for him. At the end I did feel that Tiafoe lost it rather than Andy winning it but what was good was that when needed the serve from Andy was there for him. When did he last do a 100mph second serve?

^ Yes that second serve must be a first for a very long time, and I got annoyed with Petchey for saying that 'it wasn't necessary'!  Andy definitely upped his game though in the third, but I agree that Tiafoe's inconsistency probably helped him a little.

I can't realistically see Andy getting past Zverev unless the latter has a seriously off day.

As for Dan, he beat Rublev 6-2, 7-6(11-9) in Adelaide early this year.  He's definitely a player who's very much on the up and I can't help but think that his drug ban was probably one of the best things ever to happen to him because he realised then just how much tennis meant to him.  He also sought help from a sports psychologist who, by Dan's admission, said he was the angriest person he'd ever come across, but he helped Dan to channel some of that anger into his game, with very good results.

^ Jamie has just won 7-6 7-6 against the No 1 seeds.  Playing very well with Skupski so deserved it totally.
