Kyle Edmund had two serve breaks in his first set against Kevin Anderson but couldn't hold on to either of them and ended up losing the set in a tiebreak. However, in the second he broke again and this time managed to hold on to it and win the set 6-4. They're in a third now.

Andy currently 3-2 against Tiafoe and on serve. He looks pretty good (although he just blew a volley that would have had him love-40 up on Tiafoe, boo). Interesting that he was evidently a bit shocked by the power from players like Rublev and Khachanov. I've always thought one of his strengths was being able to absorb that power and use it against opponents. I'd say he needs to be hitting a bit deeper than he is at the moment.

Good serve hold from Andy and it's 4-3.

Some clutch serving when he was down a break point at 5-5 and he holds for 6-5. Truthfully I think Andy is definitely a step or two slower than in his prime. Probably something he can get back with more matchplay. But he still manages to get his racket on shots that I swear most people would give up on.

Very strange FH return there.  Looked like Andy couldn't make up his mind what to do.  Unfortunately it gave Tiafoe the point.

And now it's a tiebreak.

5-2 to Tiafoe and now it's 6-6

Lovely FH down the line, right  into the corner of the court and it's first set Andy.

Genius down-the-line forehand ON the line and Andy squeaks out the tiebreak! That was definitely experience vs. youth...

It certainly was.

Meanwhile Kyle lost the third set to Anderson 3-6.

Rather a wobbly fifth game from Tiafoe but he manages to hold.  3-2

How on earth did Andy manage to get that lob, if it can be classed a that. in!   Pure magic (or luck?) at the end of a lengthy rally. 15-0.

Holds serve to love.  3-3.

We just had a ten-minute downpour here in Brooklyn but hopefully it'll miss Queens. Jim Courier commenting here put Andy's movement compared to his heyday at about 85 percent. I'd say that's a fair assessment. Andy just had a good hold in which he scraped a point with a blooper that Tiafoe didn't try to volley because he thought it was going out—and it fell in. Very Andy somehow. Tiafoe is definitely trying to get Andy with dropshots and so on when he can.

In other news, Maria Sakkari walloped Coco Gauff in straight sets.

uh-oh. Set points. Tiafoe blows the first with a double fault. 40-30, 5-3. But Andy nets a forehand on the next and it's one set all.

This set could be the survival of the fittest if the AP comms are to be believed, claiming both players seem to be wilting a bit in the 33C heat.

Tiafoe looking pretty good but sometimes missing the final shot. Excellent serve from Andy to hold his first game in the third set. He needs to get those free points on his serve.
