Western & Southern Open

The first controversy of the tournament after Guido Pella and Hugo Delien were disqualified and put into quarantine for 14 days when their fitness coach (not phsyio as it says here) tested positive for covid.  Novak and Andy. speaking for players collectively, express their concerns and displeasure about confusion over the rules, particularly as it means the two players would miss the USO.

It looks as if it's the decision of the New York State Health Department not the USTA.
It is unfortunate, especially when the two players tested negative.
But better to be safe than sorry really ... ?

Was great watching Andy yesterday, he still feeling his way back but had some great shots. Andy stepped it up in the 3rd set which all of the great do. Thought I recognised Tim Henman's voice but thought can't be him as he doesn't usually comment abroad, but I was wrong .

^ Tim Henman is very much part of the Amazon Prime team so they had him commenting after and between sets on AP.  One surprise was to see Laura Robson there with the team explaining strengths and weakness etc.  Perhaps she is being 'groomed' to take over from our other 'glamour' lady tennis player, Annabel Croft?  I do hope  that she stays with some part in tennis as she has certainly fought hard to stay a player. She spoke well and with a good degree of apparent knowledge.

Andy is, as Rafa once said, not with these words, probably the most skilful and talented player of his generation. He showed that at Battle of the Brits where  ALL the others were just not in the same league. That is both with tennis shots and mentally competing.  To my mind his best encouragement from that match was that his style of play of 'playing the extra shot' served him well again. His body stood up to it.  Lots of points from keeping 'lost' situations' in rallies going.

Best of all he brings interesting, more watchable, play back to the courts!?

Next match on Monday will be tough but Sacha Zverev I see as one of those who frustrates by having ON/OFF days so always a chance. He does have gaps in his skills for Andy to try to exploit?

Sad IF there is a clear situation that these team members could not have passed on the virus to the two players but IF it was possible then NYC Health are right to close down any possible spread route. There is a long period of contact to evaluate to help make this decision and gleaning the truth therefore is difficult. I am disappointed that Andy has cited the interpretation of the rules for his comments rather than deal with the particular cases.

I am very hard on such matters. I just cannot understand a lot of what we do on quarantining. We find where a virus is prevalent then give folk 72 hours to bring it back to the UK. Forget the personal issues and think logically. Unless we can factor in locality considerations with certainty then we must act in a more fool proof way. Being ruthless is perhaps the best option for both these tournaments. Testing is not effective whilst this virus is being incubated so this was probably the RIGHT decision. I hope that they looked at the individual cases in some detail to see if the players had not been at risk before making the move.

Dan gets broken for the second time serving for the set at 5-4, not helped by a DF.

Breaks right back though ... and serves the set out with a lovely BHDTL.

Second set Rublev 6-3.  Unfortunately Dan's serve let him down latterly.

Dan breaks to go 2-0 up in the third and consolidates with a great x-court FH at the end of a long rally,

And Dan finally holds his serve without too much agony and he's up 3-0. Don't know what became of his serve in the second set. A lot of double faults. Impressed that he clearly came back for the third with energy and a plan. The first set was a struggle to hold serve for both players—Dan had to break Rublev three times before he succeeded in serving out the set.

Dan! Finishes it off at 6-2 with a lovely cross-court backhand pass. Didn't look as though he and Rublev were best friends at the end there!

^ I thought that too!  Quite a bit of muttering going on with Rublev who looked decidedly displeased about things.

Meanwhile I see Djokovic has pulled out of his doubles ahead of tomorrow's singles citing a neck problem.

Dan is now ahead in their H2H with winning the last two meetings. Losing to a lower ranked player is never likely to make Rublev a buddy to someone who has just beaten him? He always strikes me as rather 'angry' a lot of the time!

I see that Andy is first on Grandstand court tomorrow according to the tournament web-site so a 4.00pm BST start for him. Novak follows after and Serena is the last match on the main court. I doubt if Zverev would have been there without playing Andy?

Has there been any further information released by Andy on his recovery & fitness after Saturday's match?  I hope that no news is good.

MA - I think we have to assume that no news is good news, although Andy did say that he expected some stiffness and a few aches and  today.  He's not a person to give anything away anyway.  Also it seems that the lack of spectators is of more concern to him than his fitness - http://www.straitstimes.com/sport/tennis/lack-of-fans-tougher-for-andy-than-fitness-level

PS - According to the ATP website once again Andy is 3rd on Grandstand, following Medvedev and Serena's matches and before Djokovic's and a ladies' singles, therefore the estimated time is 8 pm BST - and the schedule isn't up yet either on the tournament website so I don't know what you've been looking at.
