I've a feeling they'll all agree that what Osaka did was acceptable and that it was right for the tournament to be suspended to 'show solidarity' with the BLM movement because this isn't the only sporting event in the US to have done the same thing.

I'm sure you're right and as you say the Cincy/New York tennis isn't the only sporting event taking similar action.

It's all a bit pointless really because unfortunately it'll change nothing.

^ We all know that rules are absolutes until someone who enforces same wants to break them!

Back at the tennis has Konta a chance against Azarenka who can play badly and still keep winning?  Who will win of the Brits in the doubles semi?  At least they are timetabled to not be played at same time so we can watch both.  I am enjoying tennis much more now. Some new names coming to the fore (apart from Andy's return) which have revitalised the top level a little. Still a lot of that awful power only play out there but a little better on quality of shots, I feel.

^Jo certainly has a chance against Azarenka, it could end up with one of them bulldozing the other or it could be an interesting battle.

I think Joe and Rajeev might take the SF double match, but I thought Neal played pretty well in the QF. Jamie’s serve is taking a while to get going in matches it seems.

I’d put money on the tournament begging Osaka to play after a one day protest/boycott. They need her, they need the media she generates, they need TV companies to pay to broadcast her matches.

^ATL,  I note your last point and I think similar. As they have put her on Grandstand it does show that that think she is the one that is the attraction in the Women's' semis?
Despite her rather complicated upbringing, now living in the US since very young after being born in japan, but who gave up American for Japanese citizenship she is a natural understudy to Serena for the media coverage. She already earns more and is also top paid female sportsperson in the world. Personally I am not sure that the tennis is at the same level. I have seen a little of a number of poor defeats in these last two years. I tend not to watch the female game too much since the 'moon ball' became a more regular strategy for those outside the very best players.

Jamie & Neal take the first set 7-5.

3-1 now in the second.
4-2
5-3 with Jamie serving
And they take the set.

Very good performance by both. clap

Fantastic effort from Jamie & Neal. Neal is becoming far more reliable at the net these days! Initially their pairing depended on Jamie but it no longer does.

Shame about Jo Konta. She did her usual. I wonder if a week with Andy to learn how to win would be beneficial?  Four matches totally organised and playing to the appropriate game plan and then she forgets? We were all thinking that the new coach made a difference but ........... only for four matches. Some careful remedials needed before the US Open!  (posted comment here as last time I looked her thread was not being used much)

Perhaps this BBC article explains Naomi Osaka's actions in initially withdrawing from the tournament -

"Black Lives Matter pushes Japan to confront racism"

^ Aileen a quick thought.  I, and many others, do understand why she and many others use sport and other things to publicise BLM but many, like me, will always object to that.

I do suggest that there are better ways that look at how the social and racist issues are changed for the good. So far it is all hot air, protests, riots and damage to property of many that are innocents without actual proposals for a long term programme to remedy what is clearly very wrong. Thank you for the article on racism in Japan. I was there working a lifetime ago when the society had far worse ills which were overcome though education that brought change. I am sure that the racial issues can be remedied with A SIMILAR APPROACH without all the turmoil that we see in the States.

Back to the tennis I am looking forward to watching the Men's doubles. GOOD LUCK, Jamie & Neal! cmon yeah

I agree with you on that MA because what we've been seeing in the US, and in the UK to a much lesser extent, is doing nobody any good whatsoever.  Also the US has been a hotbed of racial tension for decades with nothing done about it at government level.

I certainly hope so.

That's a question I would like to see an answer to as well because to my mind treating violence with violence never did anyone any good.  We've had plenty of BLM protest marches in the UK but at least on the whole they've been peaceful with only a few arrests made, and the worst damage that's happened has been statues of prominent, and not so prominent, figures from the past who were involved in the slave trade being covered with graffiti, or in one case actually being pulled down and thrown in a nearby river.
well yes because generally People  in the Uk do not get shot and killed by police officers, or the so called normal police officers, who are responding to a domestic incident,  it’s not anyway occurancd
Anyway Osaka feels strongly about this issue,
No one was criticised Andy when he stood up for women’s iright
Any way back to

Did Andy do anything other than speak about women's rights? He did, of course, hire a female coach but I cannot remember any protests or withdrawals at such a critical stage of a tournament. That was all good on him.  Actions always should be appropriate and relevant which is why the American gun culture with armed policing is so wrong. The trouble is that it has always been 'glorified' in movies and on TV so constantly put up as an acceptable norm? Many things in life are promoted inadvertently by the entertainment media.

As you were going to say today is finals day. It would be good if Jamie and Neal started post lockdown ATP tennis with a tournament win to prepare for the slam to come.
