Murray victorious in Dubai

By for MurraysWorld.com on
Andy Murray won his firsts title of the year - and 45th of his career - with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Spains Fernando Verdasco at the Dubai Championships.

The opening exchanges were dominated by errors. Murray hit two double faults on his way to dropping his opening service game. Verdasco returned the favour, hitting three unforced errors of his own to hand the break back. Murray again struggled to hold serve, and Verdasco clung on to open up a 3-1 lead.

The world number one finally held serve in the fifth game before breaking the Spaniard to level the scores at 3-3. Murray was now playing solid tennis, and the Brit reeled off another three games on the trot to take the first set.

Murray's form continued to improve in the second set, and Verdasco was unable to keep up. An early break at 1-1 was followed up by another at 4-2, and Murray nervelessly served for the title.

"Often when you get through matches like that it settles you down for the rest of the tournament," said Murray.

"It's been quite a few late finishes this week. Maybe the last couple of matches, I didn't start as well as I would like. It's been the same for all the players, a bit tricky with the rain. Once I got going today, I was moving well and I finished strong."

Murray will now travel to California for the Indian Wells Masters. The Scot reached the final in 2009, but has struggled since then. He will be hoping to set that record straight and extend his lead over Novak Djokovic in the rankings.
Thanks for the report Phil.

That's a nice story to headline the site for a while.

Yes, pity there isn't a nice picture of Andy holding the trophy to go along with the headline though.
Rather see that than Verdasco sprawling on the court. Just a minor point!

On a completely selfish note, I wish he'd won this in one of the previous years when I'd been there.  It's an amazing venue, and I bet there was some party in Irish Village on Saturday.  Strange place, Dubai - full of double standards.  Not a place I would have gravitated to for a holiday, if I hadn't had family there.

That is a shame Elly.  May if you're able to go there next year Andy will do you the favour of winning it again.

I hope he does continue to keep winning it, Aileen, but I won't be going back - just, as you say, a shame to not see him winning while I was there.  Anyhoo, got tickets for Queens this year, so that'll be something to look forward to.
