Murray's return to action ended by Medvedev

Andy Murray's winning return to match play was ended by Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Brisbane International, the world number 16 winning 7-5, 6-2.

Murray won his opening match of the year against James Duckworth on New Year's Day, his first since last September when he ended his season early to continue his recovery from a hip injury.

In the second round though he was comprehensively outplayed by Medvedev, and struggled to deal with the 22-year-old's power and precision.

After going down an early break, Murray competed hard and put enough pressure on his opponent to get the break back, levelling to 4-4.

Murray's netplay was especially effective – he ended the match with 13 out of 17 net points won.

But Medvedev regained his composure and cut out his errors, beating Murray in the long rallies at 5-5 to once again go up a break before serving out the set with ease.

The second set was a one-sided affair, with Medvedev quickly racing to a 4-0 lead and painting the lines. Murray then got on the board but couldn't pressure the fourth seed, who sealed his victory with an ace.

Murray's next scheduled tournament is the Australian Open, which is due to start on 14 January.

Thanks for v fair report Katie.  Difficult to get sufficient match practice when he won't be seeded and at mercy of the draw.  Perhaps that's why he's signed up for more 250 tournaments than usual early this year.
I didn't think he looked too upset as I guess his expectations weren't high given the level Medvedev is now playing but one report I read said he left the stadium looking upset, to a standing ovation,  Will be interesting to see what he says in his press conference.,
