Murray and Williams win on Wimbledon mixed doubles debut

Andy Murray and Serena Williams made a winning start to their mixed doubles Wimbledon campaign with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over unseeded Andreas Mies and Alexa Guarachi.

Murray and Williams delighted the Centre Court crowd with a strong display, backing up good serving with plenty of pressure on return. Both players showed good skills at the net and complemented each other's game styles well.

The match started well for Murray and Williams with an immediate break of serve. Other opportunities came but the single break proved sufficient to take the set.

In the second set the US–British duo stepped up their level and powered to the finishing line, breaking serve three times.

After the match, Murray commented: "We played well, returned well and served well – it is a great start." Williams added: "I think it worked out well, We had never played together, so it is always a learning curve. We wanted to start fast and we take it very seriously."

Earlier in the day Murray and Pierre-Hugues Herbert lost their second round men's doubles match to sixth seeds Nikola Mektic and Franko Skugor 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

The mixed doubles will continue on Tuesday, with Murray and Williams scheduled to take on 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo in the second round.
Many thanks for the report Katie.   Shame about the doubles but it was never going to be an easy match for them.   Andy and Serena were a joy to watch, particularly as both seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.  Definitely plenty of good chemistry between the pair!
