Murray beats Norrie

By for MurraysWorld.com on
Andy Murray reached the quarter finals of the China Open today, beating compatriot Cameron Norrie 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (4-7) 6-1.

This is the first time Murray has reached a singles quarter final in more than a year, and the first time he has won two ATP matches in a row since hip surgery in January.

The Brit served for the first set at 5-3, but was broken back. He then let three set points slip by in the tie break, before Norrie donated a double fault on the fourth.

Murray fell 5-2 behind in the second set, before rallying and forcing a tiebreak. The Brit couldn't complete the comeback, losing 7-4.

After more than two hours of play, Murray's fitness was now in the spotlight. The Brit answered any lingering questions by turning up the intensity and overpowering Norrie in the decider.

Murray will play his quarter final match on Friday.

It’s just great to read reports like this and match threads again, and see up and coming matches being discussed.  Wasn’t too optimistic after everything - but here we are!  Thanks for the report, Phil and to all who keep the site so informative.  More please, Andy! Smile

Thanks for the report Phil.  It was certainly an amazing match to watch.  Saw it live and it was very much like the Murraycoasters of old.  Just when you think Andy's down and out he comes roaring back!  His match against Thiem though should give us a better idea of just exactly where he is right now.

Caught the final set, which, looking at the stats, was over very quickly compared to the rest of the match.
