Murray eases past Cuevas

By for on
Andy Murray beat Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the European Open in Antwerp.

It was an encouraging performance for Murray, much improved from his opening match.

Murray had the clear upper hand in the first set, with Cuevas often under pressure on serve – he fought off seven break points. But the Brit made the crucial breakthrough at 5-4 to clinch the set.

Cuevas started the second set better, with Murray having to save four break points.

No further opportunities presented themselves for the Uruguayan though as the Brit held firm on serve.

The former world number one broke in the sixth game on route to eventual victory.

Speaking after the match, Murray said:

"I thought I served quite well for most of the match and, when I was able to get into the baseline rallies, I felt I was hitting the ball quite clean, which is good."

Murray will play world number 92 Marius Copil in the last eight.
