Murray defeats Zverev

Andy Murray notched up his first top-10 win in nearly three years with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over world number 7 Alexander Zverev.

After ten months out due to injury and the global pandemic, it's hard to gauge Murray's form. On the evidence so far this week it's safe to say that he is at the very least a threat to the best players in the world.

Murray eased through the first set, chasing down drop shots and showing the sort of outrageous court coverage that has become his hallmark. His attacking game was in fine fettle as well, especially on the return of serve. Zverev's second delivery is fragile at best, and Murray capitalised, often meeting the return just feet from the service line.

Zverev steadied himself in the second set and suddenly Murray started to falter. Ground-strokes began to fall short and the Brits own second serve at times barely crept over the net. Zverev broke and levelled the match.

At break point down in his opening service game of the third set, Murray looked to be in trouble. But a big serve and backhand winner combination proved sufficient to escape the danger and, just like that, the momentum shifted. Murray dismantled Zverev's next service game and raced into a 4-1 lead.

The Brit, perhaps realising the significance of his impending victory, tightened up. Zverev won four games in a row to stand on the brink of victory, but there was one final twist to come.  With the world number seven serving for victory, Murray scrapped for every point. Pegged back to deuce, the German suddenly imploded, throwing in two inexplicable double faults to cede the game.

Murray raced through his next service game before Zverev repeated the trick, double faulting twice more. Fitting, the Brit sealed the win with a clean winner off another dubious Zverev second serve.

Murray will meet Raonic in the third round.
Thanks for the report Phil.
